Re: Hunchback Mountain Trail, Dec 18, 2023

Thanks for posting, Charley! Haven't been on this trail in decades (literally), though I now associate it mainly with the only place in Oregon where a person has been killed by a cougar..! Not sure if you remember that sad event a few years ago. Then there's the ghost up on the section by Devi...

Re: Corral Springs to Roaring River 11-28-23

Nice report, Bobcat -- and a rather significant milestone: you've hiked EVERY trail in the MHNF? Wow! That's truly impressive! @Rob, that sure looks like a clip from a map that Howard Rondthaler drew from memory for me when I was in college, circa 1982 or 83. I still have it. I was working on a hiki...

Re: Historical extent of permanent snow fields

The did, indeed -- at least what I saw back in the mid-70s and 80s. Some were more stable than others from year to year, but there was a LOT more snow well into summer. There were a bunch of spots on the Timberline Trail where the route crossed perpetual snow and one way to spot them is the generall...

Dog River Trail (Nov 25)

Definitely a winter hike on the Dog River Trail over the weekend -- cold and frosty and the fall colors are pretty much gone, with just a stray Larch or Cottonwood with some lingering gold foliage. Mount Hood was out with a bright jacket of snow, though I was a bit late to the rocky viewpoint at the...

Re: White Friday on Mt Hood, 11/24/23

Nice report! I love this time of year -- fresh snow on the mountain but many of the trails navigable with just spikes. I visited the same spot last summer (aka Ladd Saddle), looks a world different with a coat of snow!

Thanks for sharing!

Wahclella Falls Trail (Nov 11)

Posting this a bit late, but here are some photos from the Wahclella Falls loop trail -- I was up there a week ago getting some photos for a blog article I'm working on. Always an inspiring hike! The post-fire recovery is well underway, too, with the Bigleaf maple leading the way. I missed the peak ...

Re: 11-3-23 Clear Creek trail 487

This one left me scratching my head, but then I saw the reference to Camas Prairie -- quite pretty! I'll add that to my list of places to visit.

Appreciate your reports on the lesser-known trails of Mount Hood -- fun to read! Thanks!

Tom :)
