Re: Mount Margaret Loop

A little off topic, but I thought I would ask here since this thread has recent activity. Does anyone have any experience with Ridge Camp that can definitively say if it has a decent view or is worth checking out? I've tried searching old threads and searching Google for images of the actual camp, ...

Re: 2019 Snow Level

Clockwise on Starvation - Defiance Loop, consistent snow begins above Warren Lake at about 4k. Generally 2 - 4 feet near the summit, but some exposed ground. Similar snow coverage on the descent on the Defiance trail, gone by about 4k. Not much postholing today but I was below the snow by about 11 A...

Re: Mount Margaret Loop

Schrauf, many thanks for the information!! Very sincerely appreciated! Is it safe to assume Ridge Camp is likely to be dry in August? Of course, I'll check again nearer to our departure date for updated reports. I'm asking all this because I'm endeavoring to recruit my reluctant brother (who's in C...

Re: Mount Margaret Loop

The springs at Bear Camp and Margaret Camp should be running in August, but check trip reports. Last year was very dry yet Bear Camp had usable water on Labor Day weekend. Helps to have a small container to fill larger containers or bladders as it was not visibly flowing but clean and fresh in sever...

Re: McNeil Point Hike in snowshoes?

Someone got to within 3 miles of the TH recently and then snowshoed in to Bald Mountain.

If that doesn't work just search for "top spur" on the Portland Hikers FB page. Post was on 12/28 by Perez.

Re: Cloud type from weather forecasts?

If it's going to be partly cloudy with a relatively unstable atmosphere, that often means cumulus clouds. If partly cloudy and stable, that often means more stratus (flat and gray). Approaching warm fronts tend to result in more stratus and cold fronts more of a mix. But it gets much more complicate...

Re: Where's the best place to find hiking partners?

I noticed your recent Diamond Peak hike invite here didn't get any response. This sites gets decent traffic, but it's easy to miss something like that depending on how one skims the various forums, especially when time sensitive. One idea is a Facebook group like PortlandHikers. Much more traffic po...

Re: Having a serious food problem on the trail...

Although some loss of appetite during exercise is common for some people, it seems extreme in your case. You might try meal replacement drinks such as Ensure, Soylent or Perpetua. Even if you don't like them, it's easier to drink than eat when there is no appetite, and at least you'll be able to fin...

Re: The GoalTech Mt Hood High Route - 360 Loop

That link didn't quite work but on that site I just searched for "hood river glacier august 1922" and then clicked on the day (17) and found all the pages pretty quickly. Good find!

Re: Amazing SAR story on NWH

Amazing but ridiculous. A number of comments on that thread state or imply the hiker's experience was exciting and a "great way to end her almost-thru-hike". No mention of the irresponsibility. I'm shocked SAR did anything so early. Yes it saved much discomfort in this case, and maybe injury or deat...
