Re: Herman Creek 012924 Not ready for prime time!

Tom, thanks! Great photos! Looking back at the weather stats for 1922, there were 3 cold snaps that year, one starting on 12/17 of 1921 that we never really recovered from then another on 1/14 1922 and yet another two weeks after that. Dec. '22 there was another one too. Our weather used to be much ...

Re: Herman Creek 012924 Not ready for prime time!

Ha! Those are my tracks. I was there on Sunday 1/28... Excellent! That's an impressive hike you did. Now I see why there was only one set of tracks. Getting back the way you did must have been a real workout. My ankles are still a bit sore from so much hiking at an angle. Thanks for the help, too -...

Herman Creek 012924 Not ready for prime time!

This is my second try to recon the gorge and particularly the Herman Creek Trail system this past week. Last Tuesday it was way too icy and dangerous, so I didn't get the job done. (but I still managed a couple of miles on sketchy ice) Today, though, just enough melt-off made it doable, at least eno...

Re: The gorge, after all this weather

I went out Tuesday (1/23) to do a recon on Herman Creek and stopped by Eagle Creek to see how it had fared. I got about 100 feet and chickened out: https://donnelsen.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_1968-scaled.jpg The road to the south parking area is plowed but there's only two or three possible...

Re: Shovel Trail, Cabin Railroad, The Way, Li’l Devil, etc. 1-5-24

Bobcat, Thanks for posting the TR and great photos! Always a pleasure to hike with you. Here are a few photos of that cabin on a hike from June 2006. https://donnelsen.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/DSCN0402-scaled.jpg I picked up some of this junk back in the day, but lots more remains as you saw: ...

Re: An expensive hike to Tunnel Falls - 2023-12-28

Good TR and nice photos. Great write up, too! Looks like you made the best of your problem, too. That no spare tire thing has kept me from buying a new or newer car for years. Tesla, Mercedes, BMW and probably others no longer have a spare. You can buy a spare for those cars but there's no good plac...

Wahkeena/Multnomah Loop - and trail condition report

I love getting out in challenging weather so today was a perfect day! I'd heard there was some slide action on the Wahkeena Trail, so I was interested in seeing that but also, it has been a while since I hiked the whole loop and today, I had it almost all to myself. I parked at the old highway lot i...

nice before and after photos Don

it's hard to capture how hard it is to cross a stream in a picture, but I think I'll avoid that one
Jerry, good idea! Here's a short video:

Short cut across Hamilton Creek

In light of all this rain we've been having I took a look at the alternate Hamilton Creek access to Aldrich Butte and Table Mountain. Last August it was as dry as could be and checking the stream gauge, it had been that way since July 11th. Here's what it looked like last summer: https://donnelsen.o...

Re: Table Mountain smoke apocalypse 082023

I never hiked Aldrich Butte, and with the access problems I figured I never would, but this appears to be a viable distance for me. Do you know if the trail to the top of the butte is passable without too much effort? I remember (I think) when a bold traveler could drive up there. I wonder if that'...
