Re: Crater Lake & Klamath Falls Suggestions Needed

You didn't say, but when in September matters - Labor Day Weekend is usually REAL busy - it gets quieter as the month goes on. All roads will be open then and a regular 2WD car is fine, but expect traffic, especially lumbering RVs. The Mazama Village campground is the closest to all of the park's at...

Re: First Sierra Hike: Fitness Evaluation Wanted!

From what you're saying as to distance & timing, this sounds doable. Giving yourself 24 hours at the TH is a good idea. I'd suggest the short day hike from there up to the lakes below Dragon Peak as a warm-up - beautiful area. Even though it's been a crappy snow year in the Sierras, I'd be concerned...

Nice

Looks like Trinity Alps should be possible in a few weeks
Thanks! Yeah, a few weeks ought to do it - except maybe at the highest passes.

Russian Lake via the PCT (Northern California) 07-Jun-2018

In 2016, we did a short hike to beautiful Bingham Lake in the Russian Wilderness , along with a scramble to the highest point - Russian Peak - in that wilderness. But where was the wilderness's namesake lake? Well, southwest across the valley formed by South Russian Creek (a tributary of the Klamath...

Have you been back this year?
We have and the damage is no longer obvious. The BLM also put up some more signs saying, in effect, "don't do stupid sh*t like this." But we had signs before and some douchebags stacked rocks anyway. So we can only hope they just don't do it again...

https://www.brewdog.com/images/cms/blog/1472653726EndofHistoryUSA_5.jpg There are so many things wrong with this picture. So many. I hope these started as roadkill and were not the effluvia from some kind of depraved alcoholism study. You'd need a marmot ( ) pelt if you wanted to wrap your ...

Re: Ticks born by the wind?

I know nothing about airborne ticks, so it's a perfect topic to comment on. :) My guess is that a tick doesn't have much range. Wherever he drops off one host is pretty much where he'll have to find the next. So I'm guessing many of them drop onto grass or other ground-level vegetation, where they'...

Re: NW Trail Recommendation for memorial day weekend - 3 day backpack

If you want to come south, I'd suggest the Wild Rogue Loop . There's no snow, it's not too hot yet, and it's short enough for an easy 3-day, 2-night backpack. See Hanging Rock and the Rogue River. About 4-5 hours from Portland. Can't say you'll have it all to yourself on a holiday weekend but it sho...

Re: Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed over Mt Hood Fatality

Of course, the real issue is that Mt. Hood is a mountain on top of a ski resort, the south side is packed with people who have just walked off a ski run, and presumably that sets up an expectation of rescue. Look at the usage of all the other routes on the mountain - they're effectively empty. Mayb...

Re: Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed over Mt Hood Fatality

Very upsetting & I feel sorry for the family but on the face of it I don't support this lawsuit at all. Regardless of the 4.5 hour wait time for a helicopter I don't think people can expect the same level of emergency response or even a guarantee of response when climbing a mountain as you should e...
