Re: Pamelia Lake - 7/27/08

Not sure what the huge appeal is either, but on August weekends before the limited entry permit system, it wasn't uncommon to find 50 cars at the trailhead. I've never seen the lake that high this time of year! Usually a broad, sandy beach for soaking up some sun. I'm planning on hiking to Pamelia L...

Re: Jefferson Park conditions?

I talked with a co-worker today who just returned from Hunts Cove, south of Jefferson Park at a similar elevation, and he said there was still a fair amount of snow in the area, and that the mosquitoes were like nothing he's ever seen. So I would guess that Jeff Park is "buzzing" as well......don't ...

Re: Cone Peak - 7/26/08

Marion Forks campround has been a regular summer camping spot for my family for probably 25 years. Used to have water, but hasn't had any for the last 2 or 3 years. Like justpeachy said, no frills - - but almost always very quiet, and for 8 bucks, no complaints. Lower loop sites by the hatchery are ...

Re: Crescent Mountain (Sweet Home)

Greg, thanks for the comments. I've been hiking for many years, and like you said, I've never seen a bloom in mass like that before either. Funny thing was that the blooms were nearly as thick in the upper woods as they were on the open meadows. I'd imagine they will be in bloom for a bit longer, as...

Re: Crescent Mountain (Sweet Home)

There was a couple of fire rings on the summit, and some room to pitch a tent. Not much room, but one heck of a view. Watch out for nails and broken glass from the old lookout structure.

Re: Crescent Mountain (Sweet Home)

Tough to do justice to the masses of blooms on the mountain with a camera - - a wide angle lens would have been much better. But like you said, it was really something else. I've seen a lot of beargrass, but this was quite a scene.

Re: Crescent Mountain (Sweet Home)

The climb begins about 1.5 miles in, and it is steep but fairly well graded, with several long switchbacks in some old growth on the ridge leading to the summit. After about another mile, you start opening up onto steep meadows with views toward the 3 Sisters, and the wildflower displays. Then the f...

Crescent Mountain (Sweet Home)

Pictures from Crescent Mountain, near the Santiam Junction of Hwy 20 & 22, taken Monday afternoon, August 4th. Great views at the top, and some of the most impressive beargrass displays I've ever seen. Huge steep meadows - Lots of Lupine, Scarlet Gilia, and Hummingbirds buzzing about. 4 miles up, 22...

Re: Jefferson Park Wildflower season?

The Pacific Crest trail heading south to Park Ridge from Breitenbush Lake is absolutely one of the most beautiful hikes in Oregon. The road is, as has been noted, rough at best. But the three times I have hiked this trail, I have seen MANY passenger cars at the trailhead. I must say that I'm glad th...

Re: Best hike in the rain?

Ditto for Silver Falls. Awesome in the fall, winter, and spring, especially in wet weather.
