Re: Assistance needed for tribute hike at Sisters
I would say that a really nice day up there in the summer is definitely tee-shirt weather. Even this weekend the forecast is for temps reaching into the low 60's at the summit level: I like NOAA for a lot of locations, but on the big volcanoes it seems Mountain-Forecast tends to fine-tune a bit bet...

Re: Assistance needed for tribute hike at Sisters
Clothes? No cotton! If you're climbing in the day, in summer, you're gonna roast on the way up. Arriving at the summit all sweaty, "chilling" on top takes on a quite literal meaning. Bring a dry shirt to change into. Maybe a fresh pair of (thick wool) dry socks, too. And a warm top layer (thin flee...

Re: flowery shrub and some birdies up by Lake Stuart
Just for comparison sake, here's a pic of one of the Barrow's I watched at Horseshoe. This is a full pixel crop so it's fuzzy but you can see it's features pretty well. What complicated identification on these was that while they looked to be pretty much full grown size wise, they still had their no...

Re: flowery shrub and some birdies up by Lake Stuart
Based on your new pictures of the duck I am going with either common or barrow's goldeneye. I think they're Barrow's. The last time I was at Horseshoe Lake five years ago I took a couple pics of some of these ducks as well because I was unfamiliar with them myself. When I got home I asked a friend ...

Re: Benson Bridge: Now we know.
Turns out the reason the bridge isn't yet repaired is because vandals. http://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/index.ssf/2014/03/vandals_stymie_repair_work_on.html If you actually read the article you posted you would find that nowhere in it does any agency talking head claim that v...

Re: ticket for hiking NP during Federal shutdown...
Wow... We have become such a sad, whiny, cry baby society where people complain about the most stupid and insignificant things, that it's totally pathetic and down right embarrassing. There used to be a little thing called "the greater good", and people gladly supported it. People understood that a ...

Re: I-84 closed from Troutdale to Hood River due to rock sli
But dumping all passenger car traffic onto 14 is clearly a bad idea, as evidenced by the fatal accident. Maybe I missed it. Apparently you have seen something that indicates the accident was caused by heavy traffic? Is that why the S2000 was on the wrong side of the road when it was hit by the truc...
