Re: Overnight in Elk Meadows 9/29/2022

Congrats on your first overnight trip! Hot drinks at sunrise with mountain views are one of the perks.

Re: Ladybug swarm on Cooper Spur

I saw this on Eagle Cap summit last year. No clumping, just a weird number of lady bugs in a weird place for ladybugs.

Re: Indian Heaven Lakes Loop October 1, 2022

Does this loop stay generally available to November? Looking to do a slower, cooler backpack at the end of the month. Thanks.

Re: overnight backpacking near Mt. Hood in late Sept

These are not near mt hood specifically, but when I think about “intro to backpacking” hikes these come to mind: Serene Lake loop - Roaring River Wilderness - 12 miles RT. Green River / Goat Mountain - North of mount saint helens. Can be loop or just out and back to Deadman’s Lake. Salmon River - ou...

Re: Long Gorge Loops?

Yeah that’s usually the plan but I was looking for something flatter and closer to home for a change. Most of my “vacations” look more like suicide attempts. Kinda want something in between.

Long Gorge Loops?

I’ve got time to do a longer backpack around 5 days this September. I was previously looking at doing a loop from Tanner Butte trail, through Watum, over towards Rainy, and looping back along the gorge. However, fire has shut down the Tanner Butte area. I have previously hiked the Herman creek trail...

Re: Goat Rocks route advice?

A smaller option would be to start and end at Packwood Lake. You can go up Coyote Ridge and back, making a loop. You can camp at Packwood Lake, Hidden Lake, or the little spring half way across the top of the ridge. It doesn't cover a lot of what the area has to offer, but it still has plenty of sce...

Re: South Wallowas Loop: 8/24/22-8/25/22

I did almost the exact same loop last year at about the same exact time. Nice to see it again. Looks greener and less smokey. I saw the bootpath from Glacier Pass -> Eagle Cap but it wasnt the trip for that. Thanks for posting your experience. Glad kettle creek got some TLC. The choke cherries were ...

Re: Olympic Mountains - August 2022 (Gray Wolf, Dosewallips, Cameron)

I saw a fair number of people, but not more than the area could hold. I estimate I ran into about 20 different parties around the entire loop across the 5 days. Deer Park camp was full of car campers when I exited on a Friday night, but was mostly empty when I arrived on a Monday afternoon.

Re: Lewis River campsites

Luckily I logged all the campsites I found last year in that stretch. There are 3 spots on the river bend 1/2 mile immediately before the shelter. There is a spot about half way between the shelter and Speed Camp. (“Bar Camp”) Past Speed Camp, there are several riverside areas that are less develope...
