Re: Gooseneck start
It looked like the barbed wire ended just before the ravine and you could detour some to the left where the ravine is smaller to avoid the steepest terrain.

Gooseneck start
It took forever, but we finally warmed up in the Gorge. Was solid and mostly sunny 50s today (2/7/24) and more sunny the farther east so I decided it was finally time to go to Cottonwood State Park and give this Gooseneck Loop a look. Today I just did the uphill and went as far as the first fencelin...

First we got those little spares, but I think cell phones had something to do with getting rid of all spares, in addition to cost and space, since you can call from any place that normal people go. And modern tires just don't have flats as often. It's been many years since my last one, but that was ...

That area was forecast to be very windy, but I think it didn't pick up till late afternoon. By the way, that tree in your photo may be the old infamous voodoo tree of old. Hard to tell for sure from the photo. But the voodoo tree had an animal skull hanging from it for many years. Somebody would occ...

Re: Timberline Trail Backpacking Itinerary and Questions
We had some days of cold wet conditions in late August this year - in the mountains. It's always frustrating for me, because these weather conditions usually just means a pleasant mid 70s day down low, which everybody is craving in August. But 70s in Portland means 40s or 50s for alpine hiking, and ...

I would add two things. If you are unlucky enough to be in a heat wave, which is very possible that time of year, camp night 1 next to Rushing Water Creek. It's just a couple hundred yards before the Sandy River and is usually much cooler. Since that will be your lowest altitude camp, the heat could...

Re: Autumn in Yosemite: NoYo YOLO Yoyo
I have long had the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne on my bucket list. But reading that much of it has now burned - especially if it includes the Pate Valley - would much lower it on the list. I get enough of hiking through burns around here - not going to drive 13 hours for it. But you never kno...
