Follow up (of sorts) to my April 13th post re: bridges and ghost towns

With my last “old” trip report, I suggested it would be my last, however.....someone asked me about my strangest experience while doing the Oregon exploration photographing all the covered bridges and ghost towns, and, as it just so happens, I do have such a singular story, which seems a bit odd giv...

Re: Deschutes Upper Trail, 5-18-20

From what I was told, BLM lands are mostly open with no to few resources available - like outhouses etc., Access would only be difficult if one has to go through closed state lands, but BLM is opening more and more of their lands. Might be an idea to contact a BLM office by phone or email before was...

Re: Deschutes Upper Trail, 5-18-20

The park, along with several others, opened Friday, day use only, no camping or fishing permits at this point, and no backcountry camping, so yes, no overnight parking yet. I'm not sure how closely they're checking but with the outhouses closed in all the parks, I'm sure they won't be appreciating v...

Deschutes Upper Trail, 5-18-20

Finally a report not as old as I am.....Delightful Monday walk-about above the Deschutes. Talk about a perfect day – slight drizzle at the parking lot, then just cloudy most of the early walk, then some muted sun with some slight swirling breeze that a long-sleeve took care of, and the trail was in ...

Re: The Plains of Abraham, 1987

Man, that was neat to read and view. I moved from Iowa to Seattle in 1984 and remember the ash falling on us in Iowa about a week after the big bang. After settling in Ballard, I drove down to the eruption area and wound through some of the open forestry roads where there were numerous pull outs for...

Re: Exploring Wild British Columbia 1999 & 2004

Thanks for the great follow up detail. Sure know what you mean about the changes. On my 1999 trip, there were probably no more than half a dozen lodges the entire route, and they were mostly touting fishing camps. It was somewhat obvious that once the highway was fully paved, "civilization" was just...

Re: Exploring Wild British Columbia 1999 & 2004

Actually probably only about 1500 miles and change over the course of a week. Maybe 100 miles from Port Angeles to Abbotsford, 320 to Williams Lake, then 280 to Bella Coola. Probably about 70-80 gallons of fuel at less than $3 per, and I camped all the way. That's what retirement does to ya Dean. It...

Re: Exploring Wild British Columbia 1999 & 2004

I can see where that loop would attract any good adventurer....but no, as I recall the time I made that trip was one of the times when the ferry service was going through some sort of labor issue, and Bella Coola wasn't on the stop list for a spell. After Bella Coola and the drive back up The Hill, ...

Exploring Wild British Columbia 1999 & 2004

Since it appears many of us will have a few more weeks of waiting out all the closures and suggested re-openings, I’ll make this the final of my posts of the old days - 1999 and 2004 - two trips I consider among the most enjoyable wanderings and adventures of my life. I was hoping to get more older ...

Re: Sawtooths Backpack, July 1995

Excellent TR Gordon…..age of the trip isn't overly relevant at this point, a good trip is a good trip, and any trip to the Sawtooths seems a good trip, so I have to agree with Bosterson. First two times I went to that region was in early May with a friend from B.C., and both times the roads were sti...
