Re: Stahlman Point Sunrise, 5/1/17

Great pictures! I just discovered that trail myself while reading Matt Reeder's book, 101 Hikes in the Majestic Mt Jefferson Region. Looks like a great hike! I like your idea for hitting it early, great sunrise shots.

Re: First hike with trekking poles at age 54...

I've used and abused trekking poles for a few years now. My carbon fiber poles have held up well under a lot of abuse and over 100 hikes in the past four years. I really like having them, especially when going downhill and when crossing water on logs and other areas where balance is important. NEXT ...

Re: Hiking with speakers

While descending the Eagle Creek Trail last Friday I passed more than one group of young people who were blasting their music over bluetooth speaker. It was a bit annoying. Fortunately they passed by quick enough that I wasn't subjected to it for more than 30 seconds or so at a time.

Re: A close call and lessons learned

Thanks for sharing your close call with nearly having a SAR meet and greet. :o Pushing the button and calling for help is something that I think Lurch could advise us all on better than most. All kidding aside, I'm glad you made it out with only wet feet and a good scare. I'm sure that being by your...

Re: Tick Deschutes 4/23/2017

No fun, Jerry! I ended up on antibiotics two separate times after getting tick bites twice in one year. My doctor recommended it after seeing the way the sores on my body looked.

Best of luck to you!

Re: unofficial trail maintenance etiquette?

I've always carried a folding saw in my pack for such situations. Currently I'm carrying the Bahco Laplander saw and it does a decent job on small stuff (it's got an 8" or 9" blade). Good topic and plenty of good responses. I suppose if you're going to cut back limbs or trees that block the trail, t...

Re: GPS?

I've used the Garmin 62s for years now and it's great. Reliable, locks on and creates accurate tracks. Free maps with trails can be downloaded and installed from www.nwtopos.com (I'm not sure if there are any other free sources out there). The Garmin 64s is now on sale at many places for $199 and it...

Re: Reactions to trekking poles

Yep, I was once asked why I was carrying ski poles when I did a Wahkeena-Larch Mtn hike (up to Sherrard Point via Wahkeena and down the same way). I just smiled, shook my head and casually mentioned that they are trekking poles. Side note (sorry for the thread drift here) but one time a dad said to ...

Re: gloves for bushwhacking/scrambling

Great topic! I just purchased a pair of THESE from Amazon for hiking in weather that doesn't require insulated (warm) gloves. I wore them on my last hike (a short 8 mile trek) and they were very comfortable. These gloves have the features I've been looking for: breathable, protective, good grip and ...
