Re: Ruckel Ridge - Ruckel Creek Loop

Nice NR; great TR! With this kind of snowpack, suddenly regular Gorge trail outings become serious mountaineering objectives. Ruckel Ridge must be pretty interesting in spots, not to mention the way down. Friend and I thumped up Dog Mtn and crossed the traverse on Sunday. Similar cement-snow and jus...

Re: Ice climbing in the gorge? Yep! Check this out.

Mist Falls and down below Cape Horn are also popular ice climbing areas.
It doesn't happen very often as conditions have to be just right.

Re: Dog Mountain from Dog Creek Falls via east ridge

I don't think there is a "standard" route up that ridge as it's so minimally traveled. Most folks explore Dog Creek itself and stay off the ridges. Unless there's been recent user maintenance, those saw cuts are old (I remember seeing them a few years back) and most of the trail is animal created. ...

Nice report, CD. The route you came up is called the Fire Escape - emergency escape route from Nesika in the event of wildfire.

Re: The Quiet Pledge: What to do about overcrowding

That said, I think it's a great idea to put up a best practices FAQ on the front of the FG regardless (just in case!). Maybe a quick blurb about LNT should be posted at the very top (with a link to the FAQ) before you're even able to see the map and hikes list and stuff. If TKO wants to be the "lea...

Re: The Quiet Pledge: What to do about overcrowding

General question: does oregonhikers host anything like an FAQ / hiking best practices / information on LNT / etc.? An article targeted towards newcomers to hiking and/or the inexperienced? I glanced around the forums and field guide, but didn't find much along these lines; possibly I missed it? If n...

Re: Labyrinth, between Coyote Wall and Catherine Creek

The trees with bones and feathers hanging from them????? The Voodoo Trail linking Labyrinth with the scarp to the east (before Catherine Creek) used to be marked with animal bones on wires hanging from the trees -- c/o some crazed mountain bikers who put the trail in. DRM's picture of the skull in ...

Hiking the OCT: Samuel Boardman State Park (SW Oregon Coast)

https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5636/30967595185_ea4eebc9e1_c.jpg Opening pic... Ever since a very short, but inspiring, visit to Samuel Boardman State Park a number of years ago, a return trip there has been in the back of my mind. With an unexpected three-day weekend suddenly manifesting, it seemed...

Hard to say from on high, but does look like the tent in the photo is set up on a snow bridge. :?
Hope he's found safe & sound.
