I would second that, and I think that goes back to my point about knowing, testing, and using your gear.

Re: Minimum pack size / emergency supplies
Lurch, thank you for your advice. I have a follow-up questions I hope you will entertain. I'm all for Q&A Time, I'm not the end all source by any means, just been doing and teaching this awhile and seen lots of things, good and bad! You emphasize "STAY DRY." What if wet layers are contained u...

Re: Battery door? Airplane?
May want to contact the FAA, they tend to be interested when things fall off aircraft, and could probably help ID the mystery

Re: Minimum pack size / emergency supplies
Personally, I despise the ultra lightweight mylar "space blankets". They're not very functional, one time use only, fragile, and in all honesty are probably more of a false assurance than an actual asset. I much prefer the heavier (preferably ripstop) emergency blankets, you can also get military su...

Re: Minimum pack size / emergency supplies
Situations that develop into search and rescues don't always involve one big mistake caused by inexperience. Occasionally, a "sensible, experienced hiker" will make a series of misjudgments, each one seemingly small and not necessarily a dangerous decision until it is viewed in retrospect. Pile a f...

Re: Minimum pack size / emergency supplies
I would almost lean towards saying your pack is too small. Those 'lightweight' packs aren't really designed to be ergonomic, since they aren't really designed to hold much weight. Alternatively, you could also look at chest packs or vests. If you're truly concerned about being stable in an emergency...

Re: MSH missing hiker, "Ant Canyon"?
I realize there are some sensitivity issues of rescuing someone and then turning around and saying, "OK, everyone, here's how this guy's an idiot..." But they've always been happy to drill us on never turning your back on the ocean, never climbing on logs... and the numbers of people hurt on the be...

Re: Blister Prevention
Since it sounds like you've got a pretty good handle on the 'normal' solutions, it may be time to think a bit outside the box. Blisters are caused by friction, if you're constantly getting one in the same spot than I would say it's a boot issue. You can work with that by layering up moleskin potenti...

Just get a Mora.
I would be extremely careful about carrying a knife in general, let alone a fixed blade around Europe... Read up on your laws.
