From here, we could see how close Washington’s Larch Mountain was.

The picture shows Livingston Mountain, with it's main peak shrouded by clouds to the right and Little Baldy being a subordinate peak to the left.

Re: Boyles creek cave

I think I have vaguely heard of that cave. But it caused me to do a Google search. And that came up with this PDF from the 60s. Informational Circular 40: Caves of Washington It turns out there are far more lava tubes in Skamania County, and near Mt. St. Helens, than I knew of. I feel ripped off. Th...

Re: Mabee Mines

Do you think its possible to get to the yellow jacket/copper canyon mine from the peak of bluff mountain? Opposed to fighting your way north from Skamania mine. Understanding that I haven't visited the mines on Skamania Mines road in 20 years; I wouldn't refer to the approach to Yellow Jacket from ...

Re: South washington treasures

Will Wilhite has a great webpage for fire lookouts. He has visited most of the sites in Washington and Oregon. I've been to most of the mines around Silver Star. I really enjoy visiting the ones on Copper Creek and Miner's Creek because there are a lot of mines to find with a few miles of hiking. Mi...

Re: Multnomah Falls Trailhead page(s)

My own impression is that the 504s occur more frequently at "busy" user times - evenings and weekends, but they can occur any time of the day. I try not to work on the FG on weekends. Hiker crowding has become so bad that, not only do veteran hikers avoid the trails on a weekend, they now avoid wri...

This Day in History: White Friday Avalanches

During World War 1 in 1916 , Austria was fighting against Italy in the Alps. That summer they built a number of barracks high in the Alps, including one on the Gran Poz summit of Mt. Marmolada. That winter saw record-breaking snowfall. A pile of snow was poised just above the barracks. The commandin...

Re: IP Address Blacklisted

It makes me wonder whether maybe these IP addresses aren't really blocked at all, but the OH server is just having trouble communicating with the spam-checking service. Seems likely. I got the same error yesterday four or five times before my post went through. I just saved a draft and kept trying ...

Re: Nakia Creek Fire aftermath

Not only is the road ungated, it's been nicely repaired, and probably better than before (I think all my previous visits have been in snow, so hard to be sure it's better than before, but it's definitely been repaired post-fire). The scope of the burned area was not nearly as extensive as I expecte...

Re: Sub/Alpine meadows, fires, & climate change

I can't find it now, but I remember reading that the Klickitat and Yakama Indians would pick visit Indian Heaven to pick berries. They would dry the berries over a fire, and then when they left they would encourage their fires to spread. So no one was in the area at the end of berry month when the f...

Re: Large wildfire southwest of Silver Star Mountain

The DNR just produced this trail closure map. Grouse Vista trailhead is still open. It looks like they are keeping the closure closer to Larch Mountain itself.
