Re: Bridal Veil Plateau is different now

Those photos are from the southwestern corner of Foxglove, straight south to Smith Road and then southeast to Palmer Mill Road, right? I was actually planning to do that tomorrow, so I'm glad I checked here and got a heads-up. I guess I'll still go up and take a look, but probably won't bother trekk...

Re: Hike conditioning: do lots of short hikes prepare you for long ones?

I agree that math is fun and I love a good chart, but the car comparison doesn't seem relevant. Besides the dramatic difference in wind drag between walking and driving speeds, a car and a human body have different mechanical issues that come into play. That is, they are both more or less efficient ...

Re: Devil's Rest: Fog, Snow and Charcoal

Go around the summit rocks to the east and you'll see the faint path headed north. Right about where it starts descending, check the trees on the left of the path above eye level.

Re: Devils Rest from Wahkeena Falls TH

My understanding is the public postings limit the open areas to 25' of the defined trails. My reading of the map is that the 25' rule only applies in the red shaded areas of the map, which are labeled "area closed." In the latest map, the area west of the Larch Mountain trail is no longer shaded. L...

Re: Devils Rest from Wahkeena Falls TH

I was happy not to hear any mysterious growling on my hike today! I'm hearing conflicting reports about whether the areas off the official trails, including the Foxglove network, are still forbidden. The 11/23 Forest Service map shows everything west of Larch Mountain Trail as open again: https://ww...

Re: Angels Rest to Multonomah Falls Hike

I went up and back on the official Devil's Rest trail. I just posted a trip report:

The remaining branches on this log reminded me of rock cairns.

This is the only tree I noticed where the fire reached the lower branches, but didn't go higher.

A few items have already been stashed under the Devil's Rest rocks.

Coming back down, looking across the plateau toward Multnomah Basin Road. There was actually a lot of green visible back there, despite the charred foreground.

The new undergrowth on Vista Point was showing fall colors.

This was the only section of fully burned trees.

Looking across the Wahkeena Creek canyon, a few more dead trees were visible.

Dropping out of the fog again, the green across the river reflected nicely in the water.

Devil's Rest: Fog, Snow and Charcoal

Wahkeena trailhead to Devil's Rest is probably my favorite and most frequent hike. I've enjoyed so many good moments absorbing the ambience at Wahkeena Spring or Devil's Rest, or exploring the old logging roads up on the plateau. So I was nervous with anticipation to get back there today. I got to t...

Re: Angels Rest to Multonomah Falls Hike

My sign with the elevation 2,450' is gone... I was there today and saw a portion of the old sign lying on a rock a few feet from the new sign. I also checked and was happy to see that the "devil sledding" sign at the top of the Primrose was still there. But I'm not sure whether the kid who set the ...

Re: Devils Rest from Wahkeena Falls TH

as I just started heading down from the summit, i heard 1 single weird loud growl, but it did not sound like a dog. I paused and looked all around to see if there was a dog or something, but none. Felt creepy! I was planning to do this tomorrow, but great, now I'm already creeped out! ;) Actually I...
