Re: Columbia River Gorge Traverse - March 20-25, 2014

Wow! Thanks for posting. I appreciate the detailed trail information - it will help in planning much (much!) more modest hikes this spring :)

Re: pt 4: Brookings

Wow, these have all been spectacular! Thanks for posting. We took a road trip down there a few years ago, and I agree - it really is a special place.

Good point!
Seriously. It was like walking from summer to winter and back.

Re: Eagle-Benson Loop, 3-24-14

Keep in mind that if you had gone clockwise, from Hunter's Camp on Ruckel Creek you could pretty much bound east and you know you're going to hit the PCT. So the route-finding is easier if there is snow on the plateau. Good point. This was only my third time up there, and my first time past Hunter'...

Re: Enchanted Valley, Olympic National Park

Now, I'm 54. I'm no young whippersnapper and I well know that I'm at the age where the inexorable decline has of late started. My dad's 60 and I'm 29, but he's still way, way faster than I am. My mileage for the loop was a little higher because I ended up taking a circuitous route all the way around the Benson Plateau, but if you go straight through that sounds right.

Eagle-Benson Loop, 3-24-14

I've been thinking about this loop ever since Matt (Water) asked about it last week , and gave it a go yesterday. There's still a bit of snow on the Benson Plateau, and route finding through the plateau is a little sketch (more on that in a moment), but you can definitely now do it without snowshoes...

Thanks for the trip report! Were you breaking trail on the Benson Plateau? I was up there today, and there were only maybe two tracks on the PCT.

Re: 2014 Snow Level Thread

Maybe six inches of fresh snow on the Larch Mountain trail today starting around 2000 feet, though I'm not sure how long it will last.
