Re: Above the Smoke to Echo Lake, Eagle Cap Aug 5-6 2017

No, I didn't know there was a way to get to Billy Jones Lake. I saw it on the map and walked in that direction, but it looked like all cliffs and talus slopes. On IMG 1846, traverse the talus slope to the notch in the middle of the pic. There is a boot path, but may not be apparent on the way up, b...

Re: Above the Smoke to Echo Lake, Eagle Cap Aug 5-6 2017

Visited Echo twice, it is a steep approach, perhaps one of the steepest in the Wallowas. Last visited 4 years ago and on our descent very early the following morning we crossed paths with an ascending trail runner, about 6'6", lean and wearing only a tank top and running shorts, carrying on a water ...

Re: Tried to get into Eagle Cap Wilderness

I day hiked in from Buck Creek trailhead over Berger pass, down to Berger meadows and up to Tombstone lake and out on Sunday, July 16th (20 miles RT and only saw 3 horse packers at Elk Creek below Tombstone ascent). It's doubtful one could get down the pass (snow) from W Eagle to Tombstone lake yet ...

Re: Wallowas - Bowman Copper Creek Loop past Steamboat (Sept

Nice report TwoPaw. I day hiked up to Catched Two lake first week of Oct. last year. I went over from the Maxwell Lake side and exited the outlet stream. The outlet stream is a pure find your own route. Took me 90 min to descend one mile. Just returned from Pop lake 9-24/25. One of my top 3-4 all ti...

Re: Wallowa River Loop Sept 9-11 2016

Polaris is a long arduous multi-switchback climb from western side. Kudos. I day hiked up the W Fork, over Polaris, down to Tenderfoot, up the short ascent of Tenderfoot and back down the E Fork Wallowa in early August, roughly 25 miles. A nice sadistic day-hikable loop. Did you make it over to Jewi...

Flippin awesome report. I tried the Bosterson Gap in 2014. Tried from Ice lake, it is gnarly, time consuming, route finding juggernaut, got close to descent point and didn't like exposure, hiking buddy had a large slab shift on him during ascent and puckered a bit. Visited Razz, Upper Razz in 2015 (...

Re: Goat Rocks Knife Edge via N. Fork Tieton Aug '15 Bike Hi

I day hiked the N Fork Tieton to PCT and headed South a bit in 2013 and also rode in on my mtn bike. Crossed paths with one elderly through hiker (Tic Tock) who said there were only 8 PCT hikers ahead of him. Biking in and out is the only way to go. When I returned to my bike which was chained to a ...

Re: Wallowas: Lostine, Glacier Lake, Eagle Cap - Oct. 8-10

Lake Cheval is a great off trail destination too. My 1970s vintage Forest Service topo map of Eagle Cap shows the trail to Cheval Lake, but it has since been abandoned. I've hiked it, too. The high point on the route is nearly 9000 ft! This tends to keep out the riff-raff. :) It's not a particularl...

Re: Wallowas: Lostine, Glacier Lake, Eagle Cap - Oct. 8-10

Did you make it down to Prospect Lake? Gorgeous geologic wonder. No, we missed it! I think Krista and I are planning to head back early next summer, and I've got my eye on an off trail route between Prospect and Little Frazier. Ever been? I think Lorain mentions it somewhere (maybe Backpacking Oreg...

Re: Wallowas: Lostine, Glacier Lake, Eagle Cap - Oct. 8-10

Ahhh the cacophonous nocturnal roar of wind off the Eagle Cap and Glacier Peak. The initial high swirling sound, followed by a peaceful 5-10 second silence, before unleashing a buffeting blast to ones tent. Strangely comforting to me. Did you make it down to Prospect Lake? Gorgeous geologic wonder. ...
