Re: Cottonwood Canyon S.P. - Hard Stone Trail 5/6/17

 That would have been funny to see, but I'm sure it was scary at the time! Yeah from a hiking solo standpoint, if I had been bitten, I would have regretted it because I was still about half hour from the car and nobody to send for help since running would not have helped my situation. Due to t...

Cottonwood Canyon S.P. - Hard Stone Trail 5/6/17

I saw that my home of Pendleton would be in the clouds all day Saturday and the unusual prospect of heading west to get sunnier and warmer was obvious. I was going to make the early morning run to Dog Mountain, but thought hmm what about something in the desert and maybe lonelier. I found that there...

Re: Nine Mile Ridge ... or maybe six mile.

I will hope for the best on weather. Our nights start to cool a bit after the 2nd week in August. The bigger concern is the pool of air in the basin. Every fire from the Cascades, Blues, Wallowas, ID, and WA contribute to a general hell on earth feel to living in the basin in August. This would typi...

2-20-16 Spring has sprung at the Lyle Cherry Orchard

The daughter convinced me she wanted another hike, but the early wake up call didn't go so well, so I headed out alone. It was crystal clear in Pendleton, but I could see increasing clouds as I headed west. DSC00542_v1_1.JPG I chose to try something new at the east end of the gorge by checking out t...

Re: Nine Mile Ridge ... or maybe six mile.

Ha ha..yeah sadly the phobia is not rational and I have tried to reason with it for years. I still get out there, and I have never encountered a place with as many as this wilderness area. We've got it all, wolves, highest density of cougars, moose. For what are pretty unexceptional looking mountain...

Nine Mile Ridge ... or maybe six mile.

The daughter has been badgering for the first hike of the year and being in Pendleton, the N. Fork Umatilla River Wilderness is one of the best quick options. We weren't sure where to expect the snow line, but we were able to drive in and had no problems for most of the hike on the Nine Mile Ridge t...

Eagle Creek conditions

Haven't seen anything on Eagle Creek since it was trashed by ice and wind. I'm coming from Pendleton tomorrow and hoping I can get up the trail. Tunnel Falls? am I delusional? Thanks. Your eastern hike brother.
