Re: Another Silver Star Post- Now With Print ID Quiz

Looks like a two-hour drive to the Bluff Mtn trailhead, and a nasty road. Is that about right?

Re: Another Silver Star Post- Now With Print ID Quiz

I come up from Portland via Washougal, never been the other ways. I'm thinking in a month or two I'll put together a trip from the Bluff Mountain TH and also check out Ed's Trail finally. Some of Grouse is ugly, but I like the traverse across the talus slope. Kind of feels like a "real" mountain bac...

Another Silver Star Post- Now With Print ID Quiz

Quick and dirty hike up Silver Star today to check out conditions. Expansive clear-cutting has made the approach to Grouse even less pleasant than before but at least the potholes are minimal. I'd say the trail is in the awkward in-between stage right now. There's a lot of soft, manageable snow in t...

Re: Barrett Spur conditions right now?

Quick report: snow blocks the road briefly about .5 mile past Kenniwick Campground at Lawrence Lake, and then completely at about 1 mile. Only the highest clearance vehicle will be able to get over that second "patch." We parked and walked, bushwhacking up the the Pinnacle Ridge trailhead. We snowsh...

Barrett Spur conditions right now?

Hi all -- happy spring! Just wondering if anyone has been up near Barrett Spur lately? Looking for road conditions to the TH and advice on whether snowshoes and spikes are sufficient, or is this a crampons/axe thing? My partner has been up there but I have not. I know to check avy conditions beforeh...

Re: Tamanwas Falls and A Whole Lotta Ice

I had a friend break her ankle on that ice earlier this month. Cool hike though. I'm sorry to hear about your friend. Yeah, to everyone who is surprised I did okay in trail runners, know that I am NOT advocating it. I am a very cautious person, and I watched my path very carefully to make sure I co...

Re: Mout Ellinor Day Hike (edited for larger pics)

You could even see a shallow chute already, and with the soft snow it would've been great for glissading through that steep part if it weren't for all the boulders poking out. Steve glissaded a small part below once we were clear of the rocks and tree wells. There really is a lot of epic stuff just ...

Tamanwas Falls and A Whole Lotta Ice

This was just an easy little hike (or would've been without all the ice), but I'm so excited that I learned how to embed photos that I'm doing a report anyway! Last Saturday was sunny and glorious on the east side of Hood, and I was thrilled to take my husband hiking for the first time in a ve...
