Wildland fire Google + GIS map

I have tuned up my fire map and all the GIS overlay layers are in working order. In addition to the MODIS hotspot data there are also two other fire detection layers. They are VIIRS and HMS. Also new are two basemaps showing “near real time” color satellite imagery from NASA. One of these basemaps w...

FSTopo is now a public-facing GIS MapServer layer

This means that practically any GIS savvy software can display the FSTopo maps. As you zoom in, more data appears on the map. Eventually as you zoom in you will see contour lines. The FS server might take a few seconds to fill your screen with map tiles. And if you zoom in too far you just get a bla...

Re: Research for a hiking-related novel: SAR? law enforcemen

Because I want to live in hiking land in my head even when I can't be on the trail, I've started a novel about a hiker who goes missing, and the people involved with or interested in the search. Let's just say foul play is soon suspected, and all is not as it appears. Lots of hiking and backpacking...

Tips for calling 911 with a cell phone

Earlier this year I became interested in what happens when someone with a cell phone calls 911. In particular I wanted to know the details of how the 911 dispatcher learns the *location* of the caller. What kind of digital magic happens behind the scenes? On one hand I learned that the FCC requires ...

Re: European Galileo GPS satellite system just went live

Here is an article that says Galileo will provide 1 meter accuracy.
Time will tell.

Re: USFS has posted KMZ files with trail data for Pacific NW

I suspect that the data quality varies by forest. Pity there is not some metadata to shed light on that point.

Not able to embed Gmap4 maps

I just made this post: http://www.oregonhikers.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=24669 At the end of the post I clicked the gmap4 button on the composing page and pasted a map link in between the gmap4 tags. But instead of getting an embedded map, the Gmap4 link simply appears as text in my post. Then ...

USFS has posted KMZ files with trail data for Pacific NW

Yesterday by chance I happened to look at the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest website and followed this link to their “Maps and Publications” page. http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/okawen/maps-pubs/?cid=stelprdb5262344 If you scroll to near the bottom of that page you find a section titled “National...

Re: Reliable map of gated roads?

I'd also like accurate road maps for what's driveable and decomissioned, but that's near impossible in some areas without tons of effort. The USFS runs a public-facing GIS server with reasonably good data on open and closed roads. The following link starts Gmap4 and shows a map centered NW of Mt Ho...

I double checked and it does not filter out email from OH.
