Ice Cave...Trout Lake

I think the Trout Lake Ice Cave is one of the true marvels of the Gorge area...but I don't think that many people, especially photographers think of going there in April, when the ice formations are truly EPIC. Most folks only seem to visit the cave in the summer to/from some other outing...but by t...

Re: Lyle Cherry Orchard - 4/18/10

Cheryl, Greg...thanks for the great report! The new trail alignment is fabulous, isn't it!! It takes all the fear out of the downhill---the fear that you'll slip on all the little ball-bearings and end up on your ass cursing... hahaha. Thanks for the pic of the cherry tree in full bloom...I hadn't e...

Re: Exploring the New Palmer area on Larch Mt. - and a podcast.

Don, I too really appreciate all the photos and explorations of that old logging stuff--keep hoofin' it around and we'll all keep lookin'! The only place I've seen any of those Donkey sleds is over at the Whistle Punk trail...so it's neat to know that there are others moldering away, if you know how...

Hood River Valley Pear Blossoms

Hey Photographers, the Hood River Valley is in full blossom right now...everywhere around P anorama Pt is a sea of white...Yay!! Just thought I'd give the "heads up", since the bloom is a little early this season. The pear blossoms whoosh by super quickly, so this weekend and the upcoming week are a...

Re: Wind (Mountain) Fall(s Creek) Profits - 11 April 2010

I've been hiking up Wind Mtn for the past dozen years, but i don't remember any "Bob Kruse" signage, so that must have been before my time. My personal opinion, from examining the pits numerous times and attempting to "compare" them to the ones in Mosier and Catherine creek area vs the "modern" ones...

Re: Upper sectin of Falls Creek Falls Tr 152 from Rd 67 3.28.10

The Falls Creek Cave is nothing less than EXTRAORDINARY!! It goes more than a mile underground over very difficult breakdown rubble, getting colder every step of the way. I find the cave a mixture of both astonishment and confusion...as there are a number of side passages adding to the explorable fu...

Re: Only If You Wauna (Point) - 4 April 2010

Hey, i've been told by a BPA "de-facto historian" (Jim Runkles) that the obelisk and it's twin on Aldrich are "Triangulation Installations" to monitor the dam's construction-----fixed survey points. But Jeff Staat in his Aldrich write-up says that they had a WWII function...and i haven't personally ...

Don, i'd love to get the chance to meet you and go for a hike to the ruins with some like-minded gorge history buffs. I've a thing for crumbling chimneys, and i'd sure like to see this one.....my home is where the hearths are!.....scott

Re: Two Chiefs Trail from Aldrich Butte Trailhead

Yeah Meana, that's the one, courtesy of don and his legion of gnomes i believe. The land it crosses thru is still private property, but the Friends of the Gorge are finalizing the purchase of it to grant public access.

Re: Two Chiefs Trail from Aldrich Butte Trailhead

Hey Meana, i don't comment much here much...but the hiker confusion surrounding aldrich and table has got me a bit concerned, especially with the added publicity of the death. My revised and expanded book will have the two hikes, as well as mention of the "Gnomes'" Aldrich loop route...and i plan to...
