Re: First hike with trekking poles at age 54...

.... God it's terrible getting old :) I generally still pack them or carry them on the downhill where I find they are more of a hindrance than a help, that might just be because my aged knees haven't given out yet ;) ... I recall having the "getting old discussion with my dad", a couple years back....

Re: Support for Grizzly Reintroduction in the North Cascades

I would support them doing so. I do agree with the idea that it would add another element of suspense for lack of better word. I think several places like Sahale glacier camp already require you to have a bear canister with you. Its not like grizzlies are your only bear issue in the park. Couple yea...

Re: What should I plan ahead for or start reserving for 2017

correction: jefferson park camping in designated spots by the lake is now a permit. it isn't a permit to camp otherwise, assuming you're in a spot that isn't on top of vegetation, i think..(it simply isn't clear, FS did a bang up job of having an internet permit solve their problems) Thanks Water. ...

Re: NOAA Photos

I wondered about todays prediction as well. The internet (NBC) had off and on freezing rain wee hours Friday ending by mid afternoon as it warmed up. I am up late and saw the temps and agree it didn't seem like it was going to be an issue everywhere as temps were too high. I saw reports that higher ...

NOAA Photos

I loved these photos released from a new NOAA weather satellite. I just want to know where I can get one of these setups. ;)

Re: What should I plan ahead for or start reserving for 2017

Some of the activities will depend on when you plan to do these. August is the busiest month for most Americans to take vacations and things get booked out. Especially weekends. Parks are crowded. Camp grounds can be full. Campground tent sites go first. More expensive RV sites last. If you want car...

Re: Backpacking in the Southwest: Seeking Advice

I have spent some time in Utah and agree the scenery is spectacular. I have spent a number of years living in AZ. At different time periods when the economy was bad here I would head down there. The state has an immense number of canyons. The weather issues described above are the same for AZ. March...

Awesome photos. I've always loved that frozen point in time. Clouds can be good things. One just hopes the temperature doesn't head upward or all that snow pack in the trees comes down :) .

Re: Official 2017 Snow Level Thread

OMG! I remember a storm a few years back when one of my friends, who lived in the HRV said, he had over 6 feet on the ground at his house. It was Jan. of '79 or '80, I don't remember which but I'm sure it was one of those years. I could be worse!! :) dn I recall that storm as well. I was living at ...
