Re: Eagle Creek Trail (Gorge) Closed by Fire (July 5)

Thanks Don for the update. Like everyone else this was a very sad thing to see happen. It is unfortunate what wind can do in a fire like this. I have lots of memories in the gorge as most here have, and suppose in time the scars will heal. Perhaps it's selfish of me to realize it will be different f...

Re: senior access fee going up

Thanks Jerry. I had turned 62 last February and had been planning to get around to start using the old and senile benefits that seniors get, I did purchase this. So thanks for the heads up. 2nd benefit I've gotten. The other was at OHSU where I got free coffee and tea when visiting family memb...

Re: Perseid Backpack Recommendations

With the Perseid being NE I don't suppose much of an issue with views from Lookout Mountain. I can say though I was surprised at just how much light pollution is now coming over Mount Hood from the west. It used to not be so bad. This was taken on film so it was a long exposure, but it looks almost ...

Re: Jefferson is on fire...

It's been so many areas that burned out, that I'm not sure uncontrollable forest fires (natural or otherwise) can do any good. Mill Creek Wilderness in the Ochocos, in hardest-burned areas it still didn't start to regrow 17 years after the fire. Just the heavy brush, and that place is really toast ...

Re: Eagle creek loop for my first time in Oregon

As above, I spent a fair amount of time in the Sierras as a kid. We were told by rangers to bang on something metal to scare the bears away if they came into camp. Metal is something that is distinctly human. As per dean above it is the fact they know it's a human. I yell at them to make sure they k...

Re: Eagle creek loop for my first time in Oregon

What type of bears are they and what is the protocol when you see one? Little black bears, though I've seen a couple over the years that were maybe 3ft ? on all 4s. I yell at them if they don't smell me. I yell, "Hey George". ;) They are pretty deaf hence the yelling. Is it a rational approach? No, ...

Re: Goat Rocks Wilderness Trail Conditions

I went into Goat Rocks on 4th of July one year back in the 90s. While every year is different, unless you really want to deal with a lot of snow, especially this year, I would pick somewhere else. The year I did this I had to hike over exposed areas with steep snow banks. You would definitely need t...

Re: Eagle creek loop for my first time in Oregon

One of my favorite hikes. I've done this 25 mile hike numerous times over the years. It has a bit of everything. My advice for what it's worth is park out front and hike trail 400 over to the old Tanner Butte Trailhead and hike in & coming out Eagle Creek. It is a workout hiking over to the old trai...

Re: Elliott to remain public

Thanks Portlandeer. I didn't see your post and thought this was of interest to folks here. While not opposed to some logging, I thought the original proposal wasn't in the public's interest. I am happy they are reviewing this issue.
