Re: Central Salmon River - 06.22.2008

Hey Casey - there are several boot paths that descend down to the viewpoint above Final Falls, and any will do. The most obvious simply drops from an overlook in a pair of paths that converge as the slope steepens. Rope are not necessary, but the treacherous part of the Final Falls viewpoint is that...

Re: Central Salmon River - 06.22.2008

Great report, Aaron! (I keep wanting to call you "Rob"... for obvious reasons... :D ) Sorry I didn't get to meet you at the last Trailkeepers project - next time, maybe! For some prehistoric photos of the Salmon River Canyon, here are some somewhat dusty pages that I put together many years ago: Sal...

Good work, Jamey! Nice images. Which app are you using to process your RAW files?

Re: Chak Chak Falls & Tipsu Falls along the "other" Eagle Creek

Hey, Bryan - here's the lowdown on the measurement: Jamie dropped a rope over the main drop (the one visible in the video) and it came in at just over 100 feet as measured by my road tape. The upper drop is estimated at 38 feet based on Andy's GPS read - and it's a reasonable estimate for now, if yo...

Re: Cabin Creek Attempt

Jamey, have you seen the Canyoneering Northwest images of their rappel over Cabin Creek Falls? Here's the link.

Re: Cabin Creek Attempt

Jamey, I think you saved me a trip up there! I noticed the beauty of the creek at the trail crossing, too, and had wondered what was upstream. But I might try going downstream, since there were some pretty sections that you could see below the trail - no more than a couple hundred yards below the cr...

Re: Valley of the Giants - 8-June-2008

Some history on this spot: it was discovered by Maynard Drawson, and documented in his classic "Treasures of Oregon" series in the 1970s. Maynard has long been interested in "champion trees", so this was a natural fit, and he is the main reason that this grove is protected as a preserve of sorts. Ma...

Re: Trailkeepers of Oregon - Angels Rest work party 6-18-08

Well done, Trailkeepers! Great pix, too, Jane - thanks for capturing the progress. I REALLY wanted to be there for the decommissioning portion, but will have to settle for throwing a few more logs on the pile of debris next time I'm up there... :D

Chak Chak Falls & Tipsu Falls along the "other" Eagle Creek

Had a great trip last Saturday with my friend Ted and several Portland Hikers -- Jamie (Jaimito), Andy (Airdrum), Greg (greglief) and Paul (Pablo) -- to finally bushwhack to a falls that I had first spotted in April 1981. It took 27 years to get back there, but the trip was well worth it. The advent...
