Re: Indian Heaven Loop, 8/21/08 - 8/24/08

The mosquitoes were certainly out in sub-50 degree weather for my brief visit to Mt Rainier a few days ago. Different species of mosquito (there are many) have different tolerances and preferences. Some mosquitoes don't like direct sunlight and wait till the evening shadows show up, though I haven'...

Re: Indian Heaven Loop, 8/21/08 - 8/24/08

If I recall correctly there's no trail up to Bird Mountain so you must've bushwhacked? Hi David, I just went up to the saddle of Bird Mountain, so no bushwhacking. It's a regular trail that goes from the Wood Lake area up over the saddle and then down to the Cultus Creek campground. But yeah, I don...

Re: Exploring the High Desert with a 5 year old 8/19-8/22

Is the Backscatter Array some sort of radar facility? I think PMOguy mentioned it, is it part of the (Star Wars) SDI? Hi CFM! Yeah, it is (or was) a HUGE radar installation over in the Christmas Valley area. Here's a shot of it from space . It's a Cold War relic, but I don't think it was part of St...

Nice report and photos CFM, thanks! Looks like fun. Did you happen to get over to Christmas Valley for the sand dunes, the Lost Forest and the Backscatter Array? I love that part of the state, gotta get back over there soon.

Re: Royal Basin / Royal Lake - Olympic NP - 8/7/08

Great report and photos, thanks! I haven't been to that part of the Olympics before, I think I'm going to have to start planning a trip. Did you see any bears or evidence of them?

Indian Heaven Loop, 8/21/08 - 8/24/08

First things first, the mosquitoes were awful and there’s no ripe berries at the moment above 4400 feet. Nevertheless I had a really great time on my solo four-day backpack trip through the heart of the Indian Heaven Wilderness. I’ve wanted to do a solo trip here for a long time and this turned out ...

Re: Paradise Park 8/11 to 8/13

Nice report and pics, thanks! Unreal how much snow there still is so late in the summer. So the you said the flies were murderous, how 'bout a skeeter report? I'm headed to Indian Heaven next week, trying to decide if I need a little spray bottle of DEET or a gallon jug of the stuff and a bee-keeper...

Thanks for the great report and pics. I've been contemplating a multi-day trip in the Pasayten Wilderness for quite some time, your report makes me want to move that one up higher on the list!

Re: Gannett Peak, Wind River Range, WY - August 1-4, 2008

Great report and photos BCJ, I'm glad that trip worked out so well for you and congrats on reaching Gannett's lofty summit. If there's a trip to be made in the lower 48 states that embodies more adventure than that one I'd sure like to know about it! That just has "epic" written all over it. The Win...
