Re: Cougars in Multnomah Basin?

I actually glimpsed a cougar halfway up the Larch Mt. Trail in December 2015. I wasn't quick enough to take a picture of the cat, but I did get a shot of its print.

Re: Dog Mountain Winter Hike

A friend and I almost made it to the summit of Dog Mt. last week. We ended up stopping about 200 trail-feet from the summit, 30ft past the Augspurger Trail junction. We turned back due to risk of slides, deep snow, and whiteout conditions. Spikes on shoes were moderately useful, but not essential up...

Re: Icy Gorge Outing 12-17-16

You posted the print photo. I did see a mountain lion in that area (mid-way up Larch Mt. Trail #441) in December 2015. The print in my photo is probably a little exaggerated in size due to melt, but it's still impressive. I did actually see the cat a couple hundred feet down Multnomah Creek Trail Wa...

Re: Mark O. Hatfield Trail 2016 (proposed alternate included

I hiked this trail in mid June 2016, so it's fun to read another account. http://www.oregonhikers.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=24053 I hiked in the opposite direction, and I didn't do the Angel's/Devil's portion. I never saw the hornets, but maybe that's because it was early season for them as you ...

Re: Mark O. Hatfield Trail - 11 to 14 June 2016

How was the weather while you were out there? The forecast showed 50Fs and 60Fs mostly with ~25% chance of rain. Day 1 (Sat 6/11) was in the 60s and cloudy. Rain the previous night kept the brush wet on the trail, especially after getting south of the Defiance summit. Day 2 (Sun 6/12) was sunny and...

Mark O. Hatfield Trail - 11 to 14 June 2016

I hiked the Mark O. Hatfield Trail 11 to 14 June 2016 from Starvation Creek Trailhead to the Multnomah Falls Trailhead. Google Earth says my GPS track is 53.7 miles long and I gained 17,131 ft and lost 17,145 ft. The distance seems a tad short and the elevation a tad high, but that's what the track ...
