Re: hiking community fails to embrace fat queer hikers

I think diversity in a bunch of categories that are irrelevant in the hiking community is a backwards goal. A much better goal would be perfect homogeneity in the hiking community in the only thing that matters - everyone wants to hike hikes (tempered with the goal of avoiding overcrowding).

Re: All-New for 2018! A snow level thread.

Nestor Peak (3,140 feet) has only a few remnants of snow left - none on the trail.

Re: All-New for 2018! A snow level thread.

Below is the only photo I got showing any of the ground on Dog Mountain on 3/28. You can see a portion of the summit meadow without snow. It's possible there were small patches of snow tucked away in the trees, but you'd have to look pretty hard. Someone else posted a trip report for Dog for that sa...

Re: All-New for 2018! A snow level thread.

Dog Mountain (2,900ft in the mid-Gorge) is completely clear of snow as of 3/28.

Re: 100 to 150 mile backpack trip recommendations?

I'm leaning towards a section of the PNT suggested by olderthanIusedtobe through the Olympic National Park. I'm considering either Ozette on the coast to near Port Angeles, or near Forks to near Sequim. I have family in Port Angeles, who would be happy to give me rides to/from the trailheads, so tha...

Re: 100 to 150 mile backpack trip recommendations?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have some trails to research. I don't mind moving more towards off trail/route finding instead of the more popular front-country trails I've done, but I'll take it one step at a time.

100 to 150 mile backpack trip recommendations?

Hello, I'm looking for suggestions for 100 to 150 mile backpack trips in or fairly close to the PNW. In 2016 I hiked the Timberline and the Mark O. Hatfield trails. In 2017 I hiked the Wonderland Trail. I'm looking to continue to progress to greater distances in backpacking and see new scenery. I'm ...

Re: Eagle Creek Trail (Gorge) Closed by Fire (July 5)

That map isn't as bad as I had imagined, granted it's almost a day old at this point and the fire is 0% contained and there's no rain in the foreseeable future. There's still some really nice forest south of the burn zone. I always think of the top of Bell Creek Loop as my favorite forest in the Gor...

Re: Day Hikes Near Hood River In Late August

For variety you could also do something just East of Hood River for a different feel. You'll see fewer trees and more open grassland, which will be hot in August, but if you hit the trail early you should be fine. Catherine Creek and Coyote Wall areas are nice: http://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guid...

Re: Up & Over Cook Hill 05/12/13

I hiked a similar route on 7/29. I started on the Cook side, I missed the Cook summit proper and I missed the recommended meadows, but I've highlighted what I think that route would look like on my GPS track below. The trail was difficult to follow due to brush between the radio station and Augspurg...
