Re: More Fees Coming to a Trail Near You

In the National Wilderness Stewardship Alliance conference I attended last week, it seems that the trend nationwide is to enact pay to play permit systems. It was basically the only strategy various land management agencies were talking about. Unfortunately this will become the new norm unless we do...

FYI, the smartphone apps from WildflowerSearch.com work offline and include trees.
Thanks for the recommendation. I just downloaded it and can't wait to use it next time I'm out exploring!

Ok, I just crafted my message for my lovely rep Greg Walden.
Walden just announced that he is retiring, will not seek reelection next year.
Oh great well that is good news.

Re: More Fees Coming to a Trail Near You

Ok, I just crafted my message for my lovely rep Greg Walden. Thanks to a few of you who shared your letters that offered inspiration for my own. I'll note this: I've heard the Forest Service say a variation on this a few times now: "we received xx comments, BUT -- of those were FORM LETTERS." It is ...

Re: More Fees Coming to a Trail Near You

Thanks for sharing. Sounds like this will be an easy one to get Greg Walden on board with so I'll get a message to him ASAP.

Re: Central Cascades permit fees announced

What is the best method to voice meaningful opposition to this plan? From the original post: Comments on the special recreation permit fee be mailed to the Willamette National Forest, ATTN: Recreation Fees, 3106 Pierce Parkway, Suite D, Springfield, OR, 97477. Comments can also be submitted by emai...

Re: Forest Service Gorge Trails Management Plan Meeting: Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2019 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, Carson, WA

In terms of "Draconian," just look at the Central Cascades permit snafu! If people want to step up, the first step is to write comments saying the fees are not supported by FLREA, since regular hiking is not "special recreation." The FS received very few comments about the initial permit proposal -...

Re: Safe rainy day hikes

I'll second the recommendation for using hiking poles and making sure you've got good footwear. If you're not confident on slippery ground, I'd also avoid trails with long rocky sections like Table Mt. Only us weirdos think that kind of thing is fun in the rain  Use your judgment and you'll bui...

Re: Central Cascades permit fees announced

I'll add that all of the purported benefits of the permit system: increased solitude, reduction in human impact, etc assumes 100% compliance with the program. A friend recently attended an Oregon trails conference and said that at one presentation they stated that with a volunteer/ ranger at the tra...
