Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

I specifically asked them how they expect to enforce additional regulations if they don't have the budget to enforce the current ones, and their answer was that the revenue will come from the new user fees. It seems like they have all their eggs in that basket, which presumably makes the outcome of...

Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

I can't be sure if they were just making us feel like we had a say or they were actually considering our objections. There were three of us there along with John Allen, Beth Peer and two Forest service staff from Bend. On the phone were two supervisors (I think) from Willamette NF. The three of us w...

Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

So I attended my meeting today. There were only 44 objections filed. 44. This is out of the several hundred people who initially sent in a comment. That's discouraging. So if you live in Portland and can't get in to a meeting, *please* request a phone meeting. There is also an official meeting sched...

Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

I emailed Beth Peer, the Forest Service special projects coordinator who sent the email, and asked if they would do a Portland session. She said not a lot of people from Portland filed objections with them and that I was the first she'd heard from. She offered to do a conference call with me. So an...

Yep, I'll be scheduling a meeting since I live in Bend. You should each demand a phone or Skype meeting since I bet most of you live in the Portland area. Or request they take a visit to Portland!

Re: Govt Shutdown Impact Updates (and ? about Nordic Shelters)

Not all the bathrooms are closed, unfortunately. You may have seen this tweet on Friday from Governor Kate Brown, whose husband cleaned out a trashed bathroom at a sno-park. The photos are shocking. What goes through someone's mind when they come across a full/overflowing trash can and decide to ad...

Re: Govt Shutdown Impact Updates (and ? about Nordic Shelters)

People who booked lookouts and cabins are having their reservations canceled. Trash cans are overflowing, apparently. Yes, I got my lookout reservation cancelled two days before our stay. And as for the trash thing, people totally suck. How hard is it to just put your trash in the car and take it h...

Re: Govt Shutdown Impact Updates (and ? about Nordic Shelters)

Regarding ski shelters, that's done primarily by volunteers. I know in the Bend area the Central Oregon Nordic club is responsible and firewood stocking is done in the summer. Locally, the FS is still maintaining the restrooms at the Snow parks along Cascades Lakes highway but I'm not sure about San...

Re: Permits coming to the Gorge? Mt Hood?

Just you wait, if this goes through there will be a new precedent set and it will be easier for other land managers to follow suit. I heard there's a similar (to what they propose) limit system on trails in California's Sierras. But they have what, 39+ million people. And they get tourists from all...

Re: Permits coming to the Gorge? Mt Hood?

It could go the direction of Bend - but we may also look at Seattle area as an example. I think except for Enchantments in the early 1980's, forest service there stayed away from limiting access. You can hike from any other trailhead with just NW Forest Pass and self-issue Wilderness permit. There ...
