Re: The Memaloose Hills and Social Media

on any given nice weekend there are more hikes that i could possibly shake a stick at that will be awesome and not crowded.. how are you so...limited in your options? Agreed. Since we know exactly where everyone is going (top ten lists/social media/100 Dog mountain trip reports per day) it it's get...

Re: Overnight Solo Backpacking

As a Bend resident who just went backpacking last weekend, trails are melting out fast and the mosquitoes are heinous right now.

Re: Overnight Solo Backpacking

Just pick a trail and go! Just remember there is still quite a bit of snow in the mountains (although it's melting fast) and the mosquitoes are out. Bring a head net. :)

Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

This is why I'm surprised the Bend tourism and travel industry has not practically burned down the town with protest. Don't they realize the huge impacts this will have? It's going to be incredibly complicated just to go on a dayhike . It may be that DeFazio and Walden will make a stink at some poi...

Re: Smith Rock Misery Ridge Loop 5-26-19

Snow is rare at Smith, not as predictable as in the high Cascades. So you've just got to watch the weather and check out the Smith Rock webcam to scout conditions day by day. This year there was significant snowfall in December and January (I think) but some years there may be none at all.

Re: Smith Rock Misery Ridge Loop 5-26-19

You definitely timed it right with an early start and less than perfect weather.

You should make one more trip out there in the winter: it's absolutely stunning (and empty) in the snow.

Re: Visit the Central Cascades while you still can...

Thanks for that link. I missed that. Quote from the article: "Fees collected through the system will help fund trail crews to maintain and clean the routes." Uh huh, I'd like to see the math on that one. To be able to pay recreation.gov, enforce the new rules, and have enough leftover for trail main...

Re: The Memaloose Hills and Social Media

I can agree with this: "Far more effort is spent posting to Instagram to stoke one's ego than is devoted to protecting and improving the places people claim to love. " I'm as guilty of this as anyone. And as a direct result of the limitations being imposed in the Central Oregon Cascades I've been wo...

So does that mean that if you encounter a ranger in the Gorge, their chain-of-comannd and their paycheck comes from the CRGNSA, not MHNF or GPNF?
If you encounter a ranger you've just seen a unicorn 😂

Re: The Memaloose Hills and Social Media

Complicated, for sure! I have been enjoying reading this discussion as these issues affect all of us. One thing I notice is the massive disconnect between the people who are driving traffic to particular outdoor areas and the people who are responsible for managing said areas. Tourism bureaus, priva...
