Wahkeena-Multnomah loop 3/20/2020

I started at the Multnomah Falls parking lot off I-84 and hiked the Multnomah-Wahkeena Loop Hike counter-clockwise. Back in the day this would have been a quick jaunt, but as the first hike of spring for a senior citizen, it presented enough of a challenge. The trail itself is in fine condition with...

Bridal Veil Plateau 11/23/2019

I used to love wandering around the Bridal Veil Plateau, so I went on my first visit since the fire. I took the "stairway trail" up the ridge west of Coopey Creek. This trail seems have a lot less traffic. I saw only three flags, all near the top of the ridge. Below 1500 feet elevation, it was hard ...

Re: Palmer Mill Rd/Primrose Path - Dec 7, 2018

Are people allowed to walk the road to Nesika? At the intersection with the Larch Mountain trail last weekend, I saw signs that seemed to forbid travel to the east, but the wording referred to trails, not a road. I see on their web site that Trails Club members have been working on the lodge. So I w...

Re: Walk up Ride down.

I once left a car at Sherrard Point, drove another to Multnomah Falls, and hiked up the Larch Mountain trail, gaining 4000 feet elevation without having to hike back down. This was when Palmer Mill Road was open. Now you'll spend most of an hour jockeying the cars.

Bridal Veil boot trail?

Along the Angels Rest trail west of the creek, there's a side boot trail leading up to the plateau. It looks like somebody's been maintaining it:
Has anybody hiked this trail lately?

Re: FS Service Wishram Webcam Funding Cut

Reminds me of school districts which will fail to replace old textbooks at low cost as a way of sending a message to parents. Schools don't "replace old textbooks". They buy entire new curricula, and there's nothing "low cost" about it. It's typical to review a curriculum every seven years. This pr...

Re: Western Columbia Gorge reopens

The road spots at Wahkeena have concrete barriers and at M-Falls the south side of the road west of the lodge has concrete barriers Just to clarify, do you mean the concrete barriers are taking up the space where cars used to park? I saw the big sign near the Bridal Veil exit warning about parking ...

Re: Search just not working at all now?

On the Dog Mountain Hike page in the field guide, there's a link Search Trail Q&A for Dog Mountain. Clicking it goes to an error page that says the words "mountain" and "dog" are too common, and "dog" too short, to deign to search for. ;)

Mt Hood, timberline, west and north: biting flies

On Saturday, I hiked from Top Spur to Elk Cove and back. The views and wildflowers were stunning. Biting flies were present the whole way, but starting at 5pm they swarmed in clouds. Pelting back to the trailhead, I passed dozens of thirty-somethings heading in to camp. One asked me hopefully whethe...
