Re: Recommendation for overnight backpacking with kids this weekend

I don’t know about current conditions though I’ve heard the mosquitos/bugs are bad right now on Mt Hood. I backpacked to Twin Lakes a few years back and it’s on an easy, wide trail covered in pine needles and shaded by the forest. I would be surprised if there was snow there this late.

Re: Bug report: Timberline Trail Top Spur Trailhead to Cairn Basin area

I was hoping to overnight in Cairn Basin this weekend, are the bugs bad enough there to find somewhere else?
Is there anywhere scenic that won’t be swarmed with bugs right now? My other idea was Jefferson Park but a recent report also noted horrible mosquitos.

Re: Suggestions for an overnight backpacking trip?

How affected is the Siouxson Creek/ Gifford Pinchot area by the Mt Adams wildfire wrt air quality and haziness?

Thanks for the tips on Jefferson Park, looks a little close to the fire to try it out this time but I'll keep it in mind for my next trip.

Re: Suggestions for an overnight backpacking trip?

Siouxon Creek looks interesting, thanks for the suggestion. I was also looking at a few places a little further south (Opal Creek, Battle Ax, McKenzie River, Three Fingered Jack) but are those spots going to be affected by the wildfire in Warm Springs? Some other ideas were Burnt Lake, Serene Lake, ...

Suggestions for an overnight backpacking trip?

Hi all, I'm planning a Sunday-Monday backpacking trip and looking for suggestions on where to go. My last trip was to Upper Twin Lakes and that hit most of the criteria, which are: -Within a 2ish hour drive from Portland -4-8 mile hike in (moderate-intermediate) -Somewhat secluded and not totally ov...

Re: What is Burnt Lake like for camping now?

Thanks for your responses and the helpful information. Is it true that campfires aren't allowed at burnt lake?
The other place I'm considering is Twin Lakes. Anybody know what conditions there are like right now?

What is Burnt Lake like for camping now?

I'm planning a one night backpacking/camping trip this week in the Mt Hood National Forest and have been trying to decide where to go. It sounds like Burnt Lake is one of the better options (scenic views, hike in isn't too difficult, less than 2 hours from Portland, hopefully somewhat secluded??) bu...
