Franklin Ridge 8/8/2022

tl;dr: Franklin Ridge is brushed out On Monday I set out to hike Larch Mountain from the top. When I got to the junction with Franklin Ridge, I noticed that the signage had finally been replaced. I'd last been that way around the end of June and it was terrible, but surely they wouldn't put up shiny...

Re: it's going to be an itchy summer

I keep hearing about mosquitos, but it's still all about the flies for me. Was up on top of Larch today--a place I've never used bug spray before and never had a problem--and they were biting before I even stepped out of the car. It was like it was personal.

I didn't catch the rest of it. In fairness one of them was carrying a spade, so they did look a bit as if they could have been out raking forests and planting wildflowers.

Paradise Park from Timberline July 27, 2022

Wanted to escape the heat and finally get out on this trail now that the snow is finally melting. Quick conditions report: SNOW: mostly gone and going fast. Patches all around the loop but no issues. One or two bits were slightly more bothersome than others, but with the temps they probably looked t...

McNeil Point July 22, 2022

I've been hearing some really varying reports of snow conditions, so I decided to check it out for myself. The other reason I wanted to get it in today, is there are signs up warning they're starting a paving project on Lolo Pass Rd next week, and it will probably be pain to get there then. Heads up...

Is the bridge in over the river? or did you ford it? I haven't been up there in years, and see conflicting info if they're still installing the seasonal bridge.
They haven't done a bridge in close to a decade now, nor will they. Hence the info about the log crossing in the trip report.

Larch > Franklin Ridge > Oneonta 2022/06/26

If you are looking to get up out of the heat a bit, away from crowds, but not burn too much gas, don't overlook your old friend Larch Mountain. Some recent trail work has been done. The small trees that were down in the upper sections of Larch a week or so ago are now cleared. In fact, I encountered...

Larch Mountain Crater / Oneonta

First trip since the road reopened. Given all the rain and some apocalyptic-sounding trip reports on Alltrails, I was half expecting this to be a swim. Alltrails warned of "miles" of standing water, many downed trees, and the succinct "worst hike ever." In fact, it was… totally normal. Better condit...

Ramona Falls 2022/6/8

Went to Ramona Falls this morning, thought I'd update on conditions (mostly the crossing). The road in was pretty terrible, ie as expected. There was a sign at the trailhead noting that a trail crew was at work ahead, but I never saw them. The entire loop was in excellent condition, though, with har...
