Re: Herman Pinnacles - 2023-03-14
Thanks for the report. I was just thinking it had been quite a while since I'd been out that way, and wondering if the trail was clear.

Re: Recommended Mt Hood day hike in March
Hiking / running in the gorge around Multnomah Falls is my regular morning fitness routine. Ie, I have been there in the last twenty years, and I get plenty of solitude. Of course you can go there, especially on a weekday morning in the off season--with the only caveat that you may be running into s...

Multnomah Falls snow conditions 2022/12/27
When I saw there was going to be a relative break in the rain this morning I decided to try to hit up multnomah falls. I was hoping to check what damage recent storms had wrought, but I had also seen snow conditions were pretty bad, so I wasn't sure how far I'd get. Figured I'd probably get turned b...

Re: Addition to the Multnomah Falls Guide
I took a look at that site, and honestly I think it would just add to the confusion for most people. It briefly mentions a timed ticket entry, which is probably the most important thing to know during the permit season, but you have to read closely to see it, and the information that's on there now ...

Multnomah Falls Trailhead page(s)
While checking this page to see what it currently says about the parking problems, I ran into some problems. First, there are two of them: https://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide/Multnomah_falls_trailhead https://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide/Multnomah_Falls_Trailhead Notice the capitalization d...

Larch #441, West Fork bridge
A tree has fallen on the bridge. You can get around it, but it took out all the railings except one section on the opposite end of the bridge, and the log bridge is covered with icy snow.

Re: Hiker and dog found dead near Walupt Lake (Aug 2022)
I've read so many different twists on this story and what people allegedly said / were told by police that I still don't feel like I have a grasp of the most basic facts. I know the average person's idea of a police investigation is 99.9% based off how it works on TV, which even in the best case ten...

Re: Nesmith Point trail open and other gorge stuff (Oct 20, 2022)
Yes, Nesmith and Wyeth just reopened. And no, car break-ins aren't even a little bit surprising, unfortunately. When I parked at Barlow Pass the other day I noticed they had signs posted around with a QR code you could scan to make a police report. How efficiently disheartening. I'd guess traveling ...

Elowah Falls & Upper McCord Creek 2022-10-3
Today I decided to do some serial hiking in the gorge, hitting several short hikes in succession. One of those was Elowah Falls / Upper McCord Creek, which I haven't visited since before the fire. The trail to Elowah is supposed to still be closed per the state parks website, but I've seen several t...
