Re: The worlds largest Christmas Trees. Goat Marsh - Toutle Trail - Red Rock pass
I too love these stands. The Sheep Canyon trail that leaves from near Blue Lake also has a great abundance of these wonderful, large trees, that similarly are the predominant species in the area. I hope the monument offers suitable protection to these stands.

Re: volcano monitoring equipment coming to wilderness slopes of Mt Hood
In a vacuum it's probably not a big deal as an isolated improvement in an area designated as wilderness. However, given the government's recent track record on why certain things "need" to be done (e.g. why Alabama needed a hurricane warning, why wind turbines will cause cancer, why we don't have to...

I'm generally not very bothered by most of what was burned in the fire, but then I find pics like this showing a stark contrast to your first picture. In my head, some of the older, larger trees survived...I guess that is where they live now.

Amongst the ancient firs and cedars
And countless logs a rotted
On mossy limb a bird he teeters
A stoic owl that's spotted

I would reach out to Clackamas County Ranger District's law enforcement officer with your photos. They're generally responsive to issues like this.

Re: Curious and curiouser
Concerning the spiders, it got me thinking about skiing on a central Oregon glacier in July and coming across tons of little black worms in the snow. I had completely forgotten to look them up until the picture of the spider on the snow reminded me. If the spiders had a taste for them there'd be a n...

Re: Leave No Virtual Trace (Blog)
I find myself on both sides of this debate, though not evenly, or at the same time. On the one hand you can ALWAYS find solitude, just not necessarily where you'd like to experience it (or when...you can normally find solitude on snow). I'm on the record (less lately, more so a few years ago) as say...

or else get caught in the dark No pun intended. I remember reading the OP's post soon after it went up, and then sometime after that hearing an OPB piece interviewing Robert Michael Pyle who wrote a book "about bigfoot" and his exploration of the Dark Divide. The book is called "Where Bigfoot Walks...

Um. The original post you are replying to is about a year and a half old by now. The woman who posted it has not posted here for more than a year now. I am pretty sure the trip she was planning to take is long finished by now. Oyy,embarrassing...foot in mouth beware the perils of the OH forum rabbi...

Re: Woman travelling alone through Idaho- bring a gun?
Meeting someone who has a gun strapped visibly to their person, on the trail or otherwise, generally makes me feel uncomfortable. Perhaps that's a personal issue, but starting the conversation, non-verbally with, "hey, here's my gun" is more off putting than a smile or head nod. So think about how t...
