Re: GPS Beacons?
I hiked from Ashland to Elk Lake last month, mostly on the PCT. My wife is used to me hiking long distances solo and isn't bothered by it much, but my 70+ y/o mom just moved here from Texas, and she was freaked out about me being "all alone out there" for so long. Of course, you have to be working a...

Re: disappointing lifespan for shoes
I'm considering using mink oil to waterproof my leather Lowas just like I did with my Red Wings back in the day. There's no visible damage, just dampness starting to get in to my socks (no, not sweat) when I'm in wet weather for a while. I've never noticed any advantage to membranes over mink oil, h...

Re: Winter Backpacking: Help Me Get Started
I have a Hammock Gear 20 degree top and bottom quilt and have found them adequate. I am a warm sleeper though...so take that into account. I think a 20 degree bottom and top quilt are adequate in most situations. HHYOH.. Same here. I've had it out in the 20's lots and I was fine. Also a bit of a wa...

Re: Having a serious food problem on the trail...
I do both. I eat breakfast before I leave, but it's 1.5 - 2 hrs to the trailhead from there. So I buy two egg mcmuffins with sausage on the way, eat one in the last half hour of the drive, then eat the other cold when I get hungry again. I call it third breakfast or elevensies.

Re: Ten Essentials on EVERY hike?
I take them every time because it's so easy. My base weight for indefinite trips is 17 lbs unless I think I need a bigger pack than 58 liters. That's as ultralight as I feel I ever need to be. When I day hike I typically leave my hammock and quilts behind, but I take everything else I would take on ...

Re: South Sister and Middle Sister ONLY loop?
You can hike thru the Obsidian area on the PCT as long as you stay on the trail and don't overnight there. That would allow a circumnavigation of all three Sisters without an Obsidian permit.
I called the ranger station to verify this just now.

Or they could just get together with their club buddies and go backpacking. They don't need a club for that and the uni can "take a hike" too.

Re: hiking community fails to embrace fat queer hikers
I read the whole thread. When I hike, I say hi to passers-by. If I'm just coming down from the top I'll encourage people with "keep it up, almost there". If someone takes offense or considers that mansplaining that's something I don't understand. However, unless the other person keeps talking that's...
