Re: Two day backpacking trip recommendations

Last year I ventured out to Cast Lake near mt hood when my trip to wherever else blocked by snow or fire or whatever it was. Trip started out sunny and warm but then hit patches of snow and then 6 ft of snow. No one was at the lake, the lake was just beginning to thaw, and I could tromp around in ju...

Re: Two day backpacking trip recommendations

I’m fully prepared for winter hammocking, but I don’t have spikes, shoes, short skies, or other snow going items.

Where would good locations for snow trekking include?

Re: Two day backpacking trip recommendations

Drift Creek Wilderness near Lincoln city has an early spring trail, but its a long drive for a short, mediocre hike. Gales Creek is technically backpackable at the 5-mile point, but its not much of a campsite, assuming the parking lot gate is open to begin with. See: snow in foothills. Again, not th...

Re: Two day backpacking trip recommendations

If you are willing to drive south a ways, the Illinois River and Rogue river have opportunities, but otherwise this is just too early for backpacking. I’m seeing snow on the local foothills, so ever lower elevation hikes will have snow right now.

Re: Making the most of any season

Does anyone here snow camp in the winter? If so, where do you go and what kind of gear do you bring? I know some folks on the east side of the continent do this, but they have colder temperatures and lower elevations. The PNW has different concerns. I would like to get out for backpacking trips in t...

Re: Autumn in Yosemite: NoYo YOLO Yoyo

Always glad to spend a Sunday morning in November reading a robin trip report! Thanks for posting and please post the others. I read every word.

Every year I try to plan one “big” trip and these kinds of reports help give me ideas for what is out there.

Re: Multi-Day trip with friends

I camped at mud lake. Still had fun, but it was kind of a creepy place. The burned snags moan when the wind blows, which is always. And it is called mud lake for a reason. Not for swimming.
