Re: Parking in the wallowa's
The Glacier Lake segment from Frazier Lake to Mirror Lake is probably my favorite in the whole park.

Re: Parking in the wallowa's
Another option would be to explore some of the southern trailheads instead. The park interior will still be crowded, but I think southern areas are less crowded and a bit harder to get to. No less scenic either. About the same time and distance from Portland. If that isn’t an option, I would recomme...

Re: Parking in the wallowa's
Labor Day weekend will probably not be a very good experience, but the week after will be amazing! Everyone has left but the weather is still good.

How did the area look? I was there just before it was badly burned a few years ago, but haven’t been there since to see what survived.

Re: When to visit Wallowas ?
If you're going to the Wallowas, i recommend staying as long as possible as a backpacking trip. The fringes of the area are so-so, but views get increasingly better as you make your way into the interior. I'm not sure i've seen much that i could do as a single day hike that would warrant the drive. ...

Gales Creek, May 25, 2022
There isn't much posted about Gales Creek or its backpacking potential, so i thought i would chip in. Gales Creek Trail is a 6.6 mile trek one way up Gales Creek, starting from the trailhead off Highway 6, West of Banks. It goes up to the Bell Camp Trailhead at the top of the hill. Elevation gain is...

Re: Possible campsites within the north Umpqua trail?
I’ve also wondered about this and still don’t have answers.
However, … if you are hammock camping you can disappear into the woods and just find any two trees. Just a thought.

Re: Food storage for bears
Although Aimless mentioned it, I want to emphasize the need for food hangs to be 6 feet away from the tree trunk. I constantly see food hung up high but just 2-3 feet away from the tree trunk - easy pickings for a tree-climbing bear. And that branch needs to be thin enough that it won't hold a bear...
