Re: Recommendations for a new hiker

For sleeping bags: This is one thing you should not skimp on. Saving some money just so you can spend 8 hours shivering on some mountaintop isn't worth it. Consider getting a quilt instead. A quilt is an "open-backed sleeping bag" that drapes over you instead of zipping up. It saves a lot of weight ...

Re: Any Rules When Backpacking

The best "rule" is probably Leave No Trace . When you leave camp, it should appear as if you were never there. Wilderness and forest areas each have their own rules (posted online and often at trailheads), some more strict than others. In high-traffic areas (Mt Rainer) or sensitive areas (St Helens)...

Re: Is Hillmap.com being maintained anymore?

While hillmap is better for browsing and reconnaissance , caltopo is better for building paper maps due to nice PDF output features.

Re: Timberline Trail tips?

I would do a 4-day plan unless you are in very good shape and have a reason to get it over with fast. Why not enjoy the experience? River crossings are simple rock-hops in mid-September. Go earlier if you place a premium on wild-flowers (and bugs). Go later if you want thinner crowds and cooler weat...

Backpacking Along Gales Creek?

Gales Creek / Story Burn is pretty close to Beaverton, so i'm wondering if anyone has done a backpack trip in or around that area. Based on descriptions and reports, I can't tell if there are overnight camping options or not. It would be a good location for Winter outings and for newbies to get thei...

Winter Backpacking: Help Me Get Started

I'd like to extend my backpacking to 4-seasons without being afraid of snow, ice, or cold. What sort of gear are you using for PNW winters? I don't have spikes, snowshoes, skis, winter boots, or any other formal winterized gear. Also, where are some places you like to backpack in the winter months? ...

Re: McNeil Point Overnight from Top Spur TH

I had lunch in that spot last year at the end of September in the snow. It's a great spot for watching the sunset, you are right. For the adventurous, there is another spot just big enough for a 2-person tent up above that spot by "the big boulder" (does it have a name?) with a small windbreak built...

Re: Timberline Trail September 2018

What sort of food can one get at the lodge? Last I checked it seemed like only frou-frou fancy stuff I feel I should be dressed better for.

Re: Help Finding Backpacking in Oregon in June

As mentioned, June is a thawing-out month for higher elevations, so check frequently as you get closer to the date. Some options that might be available in mid/late June: Strawberry Mt (Eastern Oregon) Mt Saint Helens (and surrounding areas. If the Loowit Trail is open, that will definitely make som...
