Re: Valley of the giants

If I recall correctly, the slide is 4.9 miles from the trailhead. You might be able to get to it from the other side but technically the BLM will tell you that they don't have the proper permission for people to get there from that direction

Re: Sources for public GPS tracks?

You can't download the Strava heatmap, but you can use it for route finding. IDK if free accounts get access to it but there are some 3rd party things that you can sometimes use to view it.

Re: Ugly clear cuts with view of Mount Hood - where are they.

I took that back in like 1998 near Jewell Meadows. I never really had the full story but I always suspected it was private land that was cut then donated to the refuge. Now that I have more resources, it just looks like it's private timberland that is within the boundary of wildlife management area....

Re: Hiker and dog found dead near Walupt Lake (Aug 2022)

It's actually hard to hit anything with a handgun, especially when scared. Shooting that puppy should be proof enough that this wasn't some act of self defense. The guy needed careful aim (or really good luck) to hit both targets, one of them being that small. The problem is always going to be provi...

Re: Flagging In The Gorge

I and many other wildlife biologists use(d) flagging for many different purposes. Sometimes in huge quantities for helping other people find their way during nocturnal work. I'm assuming this keeps coming back because someone wants it there, possibly even for a useful purpose.
