Re: What did you find in Satellite photos today?

The spikes are aligned north/south and are shorter on the north side of the object than they are on the south side. This indicates both the object and the imaging satellite are are moving North to South. Coincidentally, the photo was taken very close to local noon, so the sun is due south or nearly...

Re: What did you find in Satellite photos today?

Oddly there's a road sign right at that spot https://maps.app.goo.gl/VyRntJVBJoaJrnA48 A retroreflective sign taken at a sufficiently oblique angle with the sun being at the proper angle could do this, however it's usually something larger than that, solar panels, cars, etc. However I stand by my as...

Re: What did you find in Satellite photos today?

I don't see any reason to conclude that's not on the ground, it's just something reflecting the sun directly back into the sensor which could be at any altitude

Re: Valley of the giants

If I recall correctly, the slide is 4.9 miles from the trailhead. You might be able to get to it from the other side but technically the BLM will tell you that they don't have the proper permission for people to get there from that direction

Re: Sources for public GPS tracks?

You can't download the Strava heatmap, but you can use it for route finding. IDK if free accounts get access to it but there are some 3rd party things that you can sometimes use to view it.

Re: Ugly clear cuts with view of Mount Hood - where are they.

I took that back in like 1998 near Jewell Meadows. I never really had the full story but I always suspected it was private land that was cut then donated to the refuge. Now that I have more resources, it just looks like it's private timberland that is within the boundary of wildlife management area....

Re: Ugly clear cuts with view of Mount Hood - where are they.

It's more than likely the even aged stands that are the problem, but that's really just splitting hairs at this point. I also think there was someone that looked at the Santiam fires, and found little difference in fire resistance based on stand age. I'll leave you with this to think about though ht...

Re: Noble vs Silver Fir

Noble bark gets blocky like that when it's old. I'd say the mystery one is noble too
