Re: St Helens: June Gully (most direct rim route on MSH?)

Oh, yeah, the ski trails. There's a nice network that can make for fun exploring.

Re: How do I select an area to camp in without a campground?

If I wanted to troll just for fun, I would create a new account and ask about camping opportunities at Bull Run Lake. So, you want seclusion, but also water and scenery. Hmm. One thing to consider is drive/hike to a lake, and follow the inlet or outlet creek far enough to leave the flipflopper...

Re: Mt. Adams High Camp, Sept. 10-12, 2021

Remember that the glacial lake is basecamp for the North Cleaver climbing route. It looks pretty daunting but actually was described to me as a class 2 hike - as long as you stay on route. It's a rock route once the snow melts, as it has this year, until you get all the way up to the ice cap, I thi...

Re: St Helens: June Gully (most direct rim route on MSH?)

When we found the east end of the trail a couple hours later, at the mossy meadow adjacent the lava field (the sparsely-forested tan patch in the lower left of the Google screengrab, southwest of June Lake) the gully was flowing and there was a creek, to the relief of DFW's two doggies (since he le...

Re: Mt Adams 9-16-21

Oops, my mistake, you did originally say you were below LC when you got off route. That's easier to understand.

Re: Mt Adams 9-16-21

Getting off-route on the descent is hard to imagine. I once ascended a different route, arriving at summit after sunset, and descended to LC in dark with no troubles. Don't worry, I'm not calling you an idiot or anything. We all make silly mistakes. I'm just surprised one could lose the route there....

I didn't remember that snow event, but sure enough, my pics show some fresh white on the 28th and 29.

Re: Goat Rocks

Goat Lake gets crowded? I'm surprised. I've never seen anybody there, or even in the general vicinity. Of course, mid week autumn trips in the 1990s, it wasn't crowded much of anywhere. I remember looking at the Gilbert summit register on a fine November afternoon, and noticed nobody had made an ent...

Snow can't fall when there's no moisture in the sky. Seems like forever since we've seen more than 0.02" of rain at one time.
Somebody got some 'splaining to do.
