Re: WHAT IS ABOVE PARADISE? 9/7/2019

Earlier this summer, I wandered around up there when it was foggy, horrible visibility. Not exactly scary, but I was constantly assuring myself I couldn't possibly be lost. Like the south side summit route, it was scary in the same way a carnival ride is, or like a horror movie: It's tense, even tho...

Re: volcano monitoring equipment coming to wilderness slopes of Mt Hood

Strange coincidence, I just found an old USGS marker in the langile area from my recent post. It looked like your every day elevation marking that's hammered into a rock, but this one stated it was specific for earthquake studies. I'm guessing it's from an old style survey system and not what may b...

Re: Newton Clark Ridge/Moraine, 8/31/19

Chip-down used his crampons to just go straight up the snow chute when it was there is my recollection. I just had microspikes and an ice axe when I did it earlier in the snow which felt way to sketchy to go straight up the chute without the toe points on crampons. Hopefully that makes sense, let m...

Re: 2019 Huckleberry Thread

Maybe about three weeks ago they were big and plump and juicy as they drooped over elk cove trail on hood. I blame them for my slow pace. A couple days ago I was grabbing handfulls along timberline trail below paradise park, but they were past prime. Still pretty good though. I bet I've enjoyed more...

From there you'll see your "high route" where you crossed over and dropped down to the Mooney Tarn from your report (atleast this is where I suspect you went through?).
Could you be thinking of GoalTech Mike? I've been to the tarn a few times, but not this year.

Yep, that be it. Lovely place, and it's all mine. I think it must be the most remote patch of green on Hood.

Re: Mt. Hood Lower Snowdome 9-14-2019

Nice. I've wanted to do that approach variation, especially if I could find the bottom end of the snow gully that persists well into most summers. I've pondered a Stranahan Ridge hike. Looks like there's probably pretty good access from Inspiration Point. Leave the car there, cross Eliot, make a loo...

What/where is "Illumination Park"?
The gentle verdant slopes on Illumination Ridge, above treeline but below the bare rocky zone. Haven't you been following my Illumination Ridge saga? :geek:

Another way to define it: the only parkland between Paradise and Yocum.

Re: Paradise Park to Yocum Ridge: a modicum of success

Well done, firelight. I tried that without success. Maybe I was too timid about finding a climbable breach in the cliffs. I kept going east until I didn't feel comfortable going further. See map below. Interesting choice you made after bypassing that first waterfall. I stayed as close to water as po...
