Re: Archer Mountain loop on the last day of freedom (3/22/20)

Archer always manages to confuse me. I'm never quite sure I'm on route. I suspect I've still missed out on some of the fun parts. Fortunately, it's close to home, and I like getting "lost", as long as I'm not lost. Maybe I'll go back with your maps next weekend...oops, I mean a few months from now.

Re: Gladd Ridge – Barrett Spur Loop (Nov. 16, 2019)

That's a fun part of the mountain. So much to explore, so many nooks and crannies. Took me a few trips to tie it all together in my head. Because there aren't many people up high in November, I thought it would be fun to go back and see where I was that day, so I had a reference point with respect t...

Take a look at my secret list of places to hike at dusk to night or early morning where you will not encounter anybody: https://www.oregonhikers.org/secret-list
That would have been a perfect opportunity for a rickroll.

Not just central Oregon. Angel's Rest parking warning (not what you think)

Couple weekends ago, I arrived at Angel's Rest and had my pick of spaces. I selected space marked A in photo below. As is my customary practice in any lot when I arrive first, I backed in as close to the curb as I reasonably could. Later, a car parked close to me in space B, straddling the line, and...

Re: Covid-19

Skamania County just made all outdoor recreational hiking illegal. https://www.skamaniacounty.org/home/showdocument?id=2391 If one were to park pre-dawn, far from a trailhead, and head off cross-country on a route of one's own choosing to an obscure destination, and return to the car after dark, wo...

Re: CH-CH Challenge

For bonus points, do off-trail ascents. ;)
Wind Mountain is particularly rewarding, as one can hike from river to summit.
[edit: Maybe not from the river, as that would entail trespassing. But SR14 is pretty much at the river, so close enough. Same can be said of Dog Mountain and Cook Hill.]

Re: Oregon State Parks closing to all use

They recommend those going to city parks, county parks and other public land do so with the recommendation that they maintain social distancing practices.
That assumes city and county parks will be open. What if city and county parks are closed next?

Re: Silver Star, southeast summit

Sadly, spent "real money" on them. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the ingredient list: carbonated water, ethanol, natural flavors, citric acid, sodium citrate. How bad could they be, right? Gadzooks, they were awful.
