Re: road conditions

Haven't done this road, but one time we rented an SUV for a vacation so we could drive some crappy roads. Discovered all rental SUV's and trucks come with a plastic "skirt" under front bumper, to lower ground clearance (probably to discourage this kind of driving). If you plan to drive off paved roa...

Re: Wallowas Super Loop: 8/1/19-8/2/19

Stunning loop, Brad - thanks for sharing and good maps. This is full vacation worth of views (and miles), in just 2 days. Last time at Wallowa Lake I didn't ride the tram, but now it's on my list - also good for getting up high early in the morning, with lesser chance of t-storms.

Re: Goat Rocks update (and storm watching)

The mosquito shot was compelling! Good thing was, they weren't like this everywhere. Some places mozzies were swarming, in other places there were almost none (in general, the lower on the trail, the fewer they were). Used my head net and rain coat when I needed to stop, worked great :) Nice trip, ...

Goat Rocks update (and storm watching)

A bit late on this, but since there wasn't any recent updates, I thought some people may be interested. Backpacked in the Goat Rocks from 7/20 through 7/24, and things were looking great! Snow is almost gone (more like in mid-August) but flowers are just ahead of schedule, and the next 2 weekends sh...

Re: Snowshoeing near Hood River

This site's Field Guide has quite a few options. If you click on area on the map ( https://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide/Mount_Hood_Hikes ) most of the hikes that start along SR-35 and SR-26 will do, as well as nearby hikes in the Gorge - hikes get more flat the more you go East on I-84. You'll n...

Re: Silver Star & Some Snow via Grouse Vista (01/26/2019)

Nice day to be up there! Somehow, I haven't hiked from Grouse Vista in quite a few years - that's a fine trail. Good to know there's no real snow to the trailhead right now (& I think we won't get more than a few inches in the coming days).

Re: Umbrella Falls trail in winter

You had a nice hike, even though it was shorter than planned. It's similar to my experience trying to hike at ski area (west of Timberline Lodge), I haven't seen officials but had a few close calls with snowboarders and they were not very happy ;) . I prefer waiting till May-June for snow to really ...

Re: ODOT proposes fees for Gorge waterfall corridor

Yes, I "like" how they say say no money for USPS or national parks, then give a trillion dollars to the military. Priorities first ;). And so few people who decide what priorities are.
