Re: cougars and lowland snows

One obvious interpretation is that cougars are always there, but just not noticed without the light cover of snow to provide an ideal tracking medium. They are remarkably good at staying out of sight. Yeah they are all over. Human's are dangerous. A hidden cougar is a safe cougar. I've seen 3 in th...

Updated riverside fire closure

Note sure when this was updated but more terrain opened since the last time I looked. Looks like 4610 is now open so should be able to access southern salmon huckleberry wilderness and part of roaring river wilderness after the low snow melts off. https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fsepr...

Wow! Congratz on the accomplishment and thanks for sharing. Love that opal creek shot! 2009 was quite the year for Oregon Wilderness.

The colorful map might have been interesting if it had a legend. I don't know if I had a poor internet connection that kept me from identifying how the colored sections of the map related to the proposal's goals.
There's a legend at the bottom. Took quite a while to load.

Re: Major Expansion of the Mount Hood National Recreation Area Proposed

Looks like a lot of good ideas! Bummer to see the salmon butte trailhead move even further down the road. That's already quite the trek for most folks.

Re: Trip Report Oregon Coast Trail Three Capes

Great report and pics! Yeah, the mud can be terrible on the coast. The climb up from cape Meares was crazy slippery last time I was down there. Some of the trails going over the heads are so eroded it can feel like walking in a ditch.

I just saw the USFS post an hour ago that the BotW lookout has been destroyed.... :(
Oh no! I once stayed in there when a storm rolled in overnight. It was really starting to fall apart but I'll still miss that place. Been going there since I was in high school.

It's burned up Elk Lake Creek and the Welcome Lakes Trails and positioned on the ridge above Lake Lenore and the foot of Big Slide Mountain.
It might actually help welcome lakes trail. It's gotten crazy over grown. Hope most of the big old growth on elk lake creek survives!

Re: Access to Bull of the Woods Wilderness?

You used to be able to go in from Molalla and wind up on 70 but I haven't tried that in 15 years. Also might hit road closures up there as all of the Willamette national forest part of BOTW is still closed. The 46 closure is a mile before 63 so no direct route but looking at a map I think it's possi...
