Re: Lower Rogue River/South Fork Coquille River 3-30 - 3-31-23

My heart - I've been on most (but not the lower Rogue!) of those hikes, having grown up in that neck of the woods, including one memorable day at Elk Creek Falls when we were the first do disturb a wasp nest near/under the trail and everyone got multiple stings. I also remember hearing stories from ...

Three Cheers

Mostly to 44 Trails - my father and I made our annual hike up to Bonney Butte/Boulder Lakes and were greatly cheered by the following: Lots of evidence of recent trailwork- deadfall cleared, trails brushed, etc (44 Trails had a recent work party up there) Met a very nice person who was volunteering ...

Re: overnight backpacking near Mt. Hood in late Sept

If you're into raptors, that would be a perfect time to go to Boulder Lake and day hike up to Bonney Butte to take in the migration - if you wait around long enough, you might get to meet one of the birds they've banded. But if you want to do a long in and a short out, my vote would be to take Vista...

Re: Goat Rocks route advice?

All true. I prefer Jordan Basin or the campsite with all the rock chairs down past the waterfall.

Re: Goat Rocks route advice?

What about... Day 1: from Berry Patch (or Snowgrass with a walk over), hike up to Goat Lake Day 2: Zip up to Hawkeye Point or down to Heart Lake, then pack out and up to the alpine camp/split rock below Old Snowy (stopping at the spring for water) Day 3: Sunrise from Old Snowy/go out along the knife...

That. Is. Awful. I hope you have enough good an happy memories of that stretch of trail to wash away the taint of that interaction.

Re: Hike Up - Not Down

The Green Canyon-Salmon River loop might still be a little too much down from the description of your needs, but it is a steep up and gentler descent.

In Portland, you could explore various trails up to OHSU or Washington Park (check out the SW trails map) and then take the Tram or Max down.

Re: The Doerner Fir 2-8-22

It’s in the middle of a hiking desert, up miles of winding forest roads on BLM territory in the Coast Range north of Highway 42 between Winston and Coos Bay.
Heh. I grew up in that hiking desert. Glad it is still there. Did you visit the Big Tree in Powers, too?

Re: 2022 and Beyond - Snow Levels

5/1 Defiance Snow (soft) started around 3000 feet, several feet deep at the top. We put on snowshoes around 4000'. Some folx made it to the top without snowshoes, post-holing all the way, sometimes hip-deep. Warren Lake still snow-covered, but a few feet of water all the way around the edge. Lots of...

Re: Returning to backpacking

Midweek is almost always chill if you can swing it. Permitted areas busy but contained if you can swing a permit. I've had consistently good luck in the Badger Creek Wilderness and Ochocos (see Mill Creek plug above) in early season (June). Heading down to the Kalmiopsis is another good early season...
