Re: 2022 and Beyond - Snow Levels
Nesmith Pt Trail: Got a late start on Jan. 22 and decided to check out the lower section of Nesmith. Continuous snow at about 1,700'. Microspikes were very helpful. Some blowdowns and ice covered rocks with a thin layer of new snow on top made for less than speedy going. Turned around at about 2,30...

Re: Something different -- Palm Springs area 12/30/22 to 1/3/23
Nice! I love that area in the winter. I was there roughly the same time and did a 3-day 45 mile backpacking loop in JTree and saw hardly anybody. It always amazes me how some of these places that are so incredibly crowded can still offer solitude if you know where to go (and just as importantly, whe...

Re: The Conservation Funding Crisis
the other thing I'd love an organization like this to investigate is the fees for oil and gas development and grazing on public land. I remembered reading an article about grazing fees earlier this year. I went hunting and found it: https://www.hcn.org/articles/south-public-lands-whats-getting-more...

Re: Olympic Mountains - August 2022 (Gray Wolf, Dosewallips, Cameron)
Thanks for the report! I did a 4-day trip similar to your original plan last Sept., but left out Cedar Lake. It was exceptionally beautiful! That 3,000'+ descent right off the bat is a quad-killer for sure! I camped at Falls Camp (you're right, it's very meh), Dose Meadows (agree that it's super nic...

Re: Mosquitos still bad in Indian Heaven?
I have the FarOut App (formerly GutHook), and in the past few days several thru-hikers have commented about the hellacious mosquitoes and flies in I.H. I'd give it a few weeks!

Re: Some North Fork John Day Wilderness trail conditions
@teachPDX, I would definitely recommend going up the South Winom Creek Trail vs the Big Creek Trail. I know the N Fk was flowing significantly higher than normal, so I’m sure the side creeks were as well. I wouldn’t even worry about the Big Creek ford in mid-late September. It may require getting yo...

Re: Some North Fork John Day Wilderness trail conditions
Hi Keith! I couldn't find any good paper maps. I have the USFS Umatilla National Forest paper map, which is just good for a general overview, not for navigating on trails. I have both Gaia and Caltopo, and for Caltopo used the FS Topo (2016) overlay and for Gaia I used the Gaia Topo overlay. All map...

Some North Fork John Day Wilderness trail conditions
I took 2 different trips to the N Fork John Day Wilderness this month and I thought some basic info on trail conditions might be useful, as they can be hard to come by. North Fork John Day River Trail : From N Fork John Day Campground, the trail is in good shape to the bridge where the Granite Creek...
