Re: 2022 and Beyond - Snow Levels
Table Mountain, snow free until the top (several inches on top) as of March 29. I went up Heartbreak Ridge, down Westway, and I assume there's snow on the upper part of the north ridge route but didn't check it out.

Re: Cottonwood Canyon - Pinnacles Trail (Dec 31)
Hey, I think my husband and I saw you that day! (We were the ones looking for pheasant and chukar.) It's so cool to see so many sheep. We first started going there when the state park opened in 2013(ish?) and it was very rare to see a big horned sheep. Now we see them all the time out there! Last ye...

Re: Timberline Trail Backpacking Itinerary and Questions
Just wanted to second Charley's comment and strongly suggest you have a back up plan in another area. All of the recommendations in the above post are excellent. Also, even though Olympic National Park requires backcountry permits, most of the permits are non-quota (although a few areas areas are qu...

Blowdown going to Nesika Lodge
Between Larch Mt Trail and Nesika Lodge there are a few new fairly significant trees down, including one before the "parking lot" area.

Re: Can you walk from Portland to the PCT at Cascade Locks?
That would be much better than running on SR14 on the Washington side. That's a windy road with limited shoulders in some places.

Re: GPNF fire closures in the Siouxon
As a lowly volunteer, I have zero insight into the rationale behind the closure, but I was part of a 4-day logout on Siouxon in June, and we removed around 40 downed trees in a 2.5 mile stretch of trail, as well as doing some treadwork, and we did not get to everything. Since it's been closed, I'm s...

Re: Western 3 Sisters Wilderness (French Pete TH)
Yup, I've been up South, Middle, some smaller peaks and done the circumnav. The entry permit I'm working with is French Pete TH, so I'm trying to see if there's a way to make an interesting trip starting from there. If not, that's fine, I can just cancel the permit and go somewhere else.

Western 3 Sisters Wilderness (French Pete TH)
I’m trying to put together an up-to-5-day backpacking trip leaving from French Pete TH in mid August. I’m not familiar with the western part of the 3 Sisters Wilderness and my preliminary research has me feeling a bit uninspired. I’d love to hear any recommendations for a trip in that area. Bigger d...

Re: Climbing Mt St Helens 4th of July, questions
In case you don't know, you'll want to be on recreation.gov right at 7AM Pacific June 1 when permits open for the month of July. I was on at 7AM today for June permits, and was able to get 1 Saturday. When I looked almost immediately after going through the purchase process (so, like 7:02AM), all we...
