Re: Mt. Hood in a day

Since you're not used to altitude, a few points. The 7k high point on the east side would rarely be high enough for one to get actual "altitude sickness", but you'll definitely feel out of breath and slower than normal, possibly even at 6k or 5k (which is much of the loop). Assuming it's sunny, add ...

Re: Oregon 3-4 Day Backpacking Trip Suggestions for June '20

The Loowit Trail is often open by mid-June in lowish snow years. I've done it the third week of June in 2018 and 2019. Awesome 30-mile loop around MSH, so maybe a bit long for your plans. Most people do it in 3 days, but that's 10 miles per day, with decent elevation change. Also, very exposed, so w...

Re: Newton Clark Ridge/Moraine, 8/31/19

For what its worth I thought the high route up to that point from Cloud Cap was surprisingly easy That IS surprising. I'm actually not so surprised. I'm intimately familiar with the terrain between Cloud Cap and Meadows, and I've learned that when conditions are ideal, a hiker who is either very ex...

Re: Newton Clark Ridge/Moraine, 8/31/19

I followed in your footsteps the day after you on Sunday. Literally, and I was surprised to see footprints this time of year with the constant wind up there. I was attempting to do GoalTech's high route from Cloud Cap to Timberline, but the wind was really gusty and I didn't like the look of the dow...

Re: Timberline Trail - nighttime loop 8/2/19 - cougar stalking

I was just trying to get at the predominance of people I've seen on Mt Hood that appear to be struggling with heavy packs and longer than planned hiking days, and appear to be able to benefit from more awareness regarding lighter gear options, unnecessary gear choices, or at least less daily mileag...

Re: Timberline Trail - nighttime loop 8/2/19 - cougar stalking

Your WordPress blog posts suggests you're considering bringing "a slingshot" to deal with animals: that's a manifestation of nearly incredible arrogance and disrespect for nature. If you actually managed to hit a cougar with a slingshot, you'd likely provoke a justly deserved defensive attack. Ever...

Re: Timberline Trail - nighttime loop 8/2/19 - cougar stalking

I think they realize there are other options, maybe they just don't prefer them. Not everybody has maximization of mileage as a top goal. While this nighttime loop is quite a feat, it's not one I aspire too because I like the daytime views! I agree there are many acceptable ways to hike, and gear s...

Re: Timberline Trail - nighttime loop 8/2/19 - cougar stalking

This is super cool and thanks for sharing. There’s certainly more risk to nighttime hiking (tripping, creek crossings, navigation, predators) but nothing that is unreasonably dangerous if you have the appropriate experience. Sorry you had to deal with those idiots! Half the people backpacking on Hoo...

Re: Heart of Darkness/Black Canyon Wilderness/Ochochos

Do you have an feedback if a hike this time of year (August) that stream crossing would be easy. We are planning on starting at the south fork of the John Day and going up canyon. Easy stream crossings this time of year except after heavy rain/thunderstorms. The first crossing is the actual South F...
