Re: Stop the Beehive Timber Sale! Save the Siouxon Ancient Forest

Ugh, that really hurts to see, I drove past the area last week on my way home, but didn't drive out the road to the former trailhead, so I didn't realize they had already started cutting. Absolutely criminal that DNR got away with selling Serenity Now! The Board of Natural Resources approved the Bee...

Re: Stop the Beehive Timber Sale! Save the Siouxon Ancient Forest

A burn is not the same as a clearcut. Remnant pre-fire trees exist throughout the uncut Siouxan forest, and the burned trees nurture the next generation, which thanks to natural regeneration is diverse and natural as compared one which is logged. The previously clearcut area you mention is beyond th...

Stop the Beehive Timber Sale! Save the Siouxon Ancient Forest

This past week I visited the wild and little visited valley of North Siouxan Creek to explore and document the old growth forest that would be destroyed if the Department of Natural Resources goes through with the Beehive Timber Sale. This area was bur...

Re: Mill Creek Ancient Forest - visiting Old Growth imperiled by WA DNR timber sale

I spent a couple summers doing marbled murrelet surveys in this area. It's too bad they just didn't seem to be around. I think murrelets are the best chance to stop timber sales but I don't think they use this area. The habitat model the DNR was using at the time was absolutely flawed and WDFW know...

Mill Creek Ancient Forest - visiting Old Growth imperiled by WA DNR timber sale

Hi everyone, got another imperiled forest in SW Washington that needs saving from WA DNR chainsaws - also a great place for a short hike to a seldom seen grove of giant old growth trees! The place in question is Mill Creek, located just West of Longview up in the Willapa Hills. Here is found one of ...

Re: Mt Mitchell and Black Hole Falls

My guess is that this was a DNR employee, possibly acting under quiet orders from on high - they've been known to close roads long before the sale takes place if it's a controversial one, or even if it might be potentially controversial. They've been catching flak for doing that recently, so this mi...

Re: Mt. Mitchell via Sugarloaf - Help save it from DNR clearcutting!

Loss of that area would be a tragedy. However, given the recent Oregon State Legislature's gift of a major tax break to lumber companies (deficits to be paid from the taxpayer supported "general fund"), I doubt that any action will be taken that can adversely impact this industry: the largest per-c...

Re: Mt. Mitchell via Sugarloaf - Help save it from DNR clearcutting!

Calling any mechanized timber harvest "Serenity Now" is peak newspeak. In addition to the fact that chainsaws aren't serene, now all you opponents of the harvest have to say, "Stop Serenity." That is dishonest and dishonorable on the part of the DNR. Yep, it also says that DNR know exactly what the...

Re: Mt. Mitchell via Sugarloaf - Help save it from DNR clearcutting!

I missed that thread somehow. I actually started volunteering with C4RF, which is how I ended up visiting the area. I can't say that I'd want to visit again if they went through with the clearcutting, whether they restored the trail or not. We have a chance of saving it if we can raise enough of a p...

Mt. Mitchell via Sugarloaf - Help save it from DNR clearcutting!

Earlier this month I visited this trail because I'd learned WA DNR was planning large clearcuts in the area, and from what I've seen this would be a great tragedy. I spent the day exploring the forest rather than hiking to the summit. The forest is won...
