Re: unplanned bivy on St Helens: anatomy of a disaster

I also had an unplanned bivy on MSH back in Sept 2004 (grew up in Woodland so going and climbing the mountain after school was a normal thing). Opted for a sunrise climb up Monitor, hitting the Loowit at midnight. Weather forecast was great so we had minimal preps beyond a day pack. Anyway, around 7...

Re: Vista Ridge to Elk Cove Camping

Beautiful photos! One of my absolute favorite areas on Mt. Hood.

Curious about the bug situation, were they tolerable? I've had some mid-July trips up there that were no issue, and others where we were run out by mozzies and biting flies.

Waldo Lake 7/3:
Heard from a friend that mosquitoes were absolutely unbearable, enough to cancel a planned overnight.

Re: Rock Lakes - Serene Lake Hike 6/1-6/2 2021

Thank you for this report! Did you need to drive around Mt. Hood to get here, it looks like 224 through Estacada is still closed? Thinking about taking my daughters backpacking here this July 4th weekend, does everything think we'll be eaten alive? Yes, you need to drive around via Timothy ...

Re: Paradise Park Snow Report: 6/23/21

This is a really great hike for those who are equipped to do it, and have good weather on their side. From the apex of the hike above Mississippi Head, I usually take a straight shot toward Silcox and then down to the lodge instead of rejoining the Timberline Trail near Little Zigzag Canyon. After t...

Re: Muddy Meadows TH road conditions?

The last 1/4 mile spur from 2329 to the TH is a really garbage road. Drove it a few years ago and it was deep ruts that would high-center my car if I made one wrong move. And muddy! Had to stay on the high side and got a couple scratches from branches. Definitely wouldn’t take my newer car up there ...

Re: Twin Lakes - Elkhorns

Thanks for the info on the road. Sounds like I need to convince one of my Subaru-owning friends to make this trip with me. :D Yeah, that road is definitely suited for a Subaru and above. It’s on par with the road to Frazier Trailhead or Breitenbush Lake, in short sections at least. Some ATV riders ...

Re: 2021 Bug Conditions Reports

Yay for the bug thread! My brother was at Twin Lakes near Mt. Hood a few days ago and they got run out by clouds of mosquitoes. I recommended heading toward High Prairie instead, and they reported back that there were very few bugs there. Twin Lakes in the Elkhorns, as of 6/21, no major bug issues t...

Re: Twin Lakes - Elkhorns

How was the bug situation for it being early season? Barely any nuisance bugs! We just put on a couple spritzes of bug spray in the afternoons but otherwise it was pretty much bug-free. We could've managed without bug spray entirely, I'm pretty sure. I think we need a separate thread like the snow ...

Twin Lakes - Elkhorns

This was my second visit to the Elkhorns, and I am now even more convinced that it's absolutely worth the drive from PDX. IMG_0536.jpg Hike: Twin Lakes from Twin Lakes TH Distance: 4.2 miles one way (from lower trailhead) Elevation Gain: 2400' (steeper pitches 20%+ below treeline, 10% slope above tr...
