Re: Painted Hills/Blue Basin/Clarno, March '24

Late April is my go-to for the region. There are some dispersed camping areas that only open up after April 15 so I try to go lock one of those down for a weekend before it gets too busy or too hot.

Next time hit up Tiger Town Brewing in Mitchell. It’s a hidden gem.

Re: Two day backpacking trip recommendations

With winter camping you need to be mentally prepared to tackle the boredom that comes with very long nights… especially in the December to February timeframe. The ‘at camp’ experience is completely different… you likely won’t have a much of a fire (if any) so you won’t be outside much after sunset a...

Re: Two day backpacking trip recommendations

Not the easiest ask this time of year. Many more weekend loop opportunities will start to open up in mid-April, but you're pretty limited to lower elevation out-and-backs (usually adjacent to rivers) this early in the year. Those would be Salmon River, possibly the lower reaches of Badger Creek, may...

Re: Exploring/Reviewing Timothy Lake (a crown jewel of Mount Hood National Forest)

It's hard to mentally filter out your youtube links when the trip report page is inundated with them. TrailPerspective has created 5 trip reports in the last month. Hard to call that inundated or be offended by them. I am one that appreciates the time TrailPerspective spends creating these reports....

Re: Exploring/Reviewing Timothy Lake (a crown jewel of Mount Hood National Forest)

Developed campgrounds aren't really my thing, but I do enjoy getting up to Timothy Lake usually once every other year, parking somewhere along 4280 and bushwhacking down to the PCT to one of the many backcountry sites on the east side of the lake. It's easy, and it's usually where I take friends for...

Re: How do you make coffee at home?

The coffee here, by the way, is amazing. Is it the freshness of the beans, or the way it is prepared? It’s very fresh, of course… but it’s mostly that Costa Rica generally has small plantations that just specialize in really high quality coffee. And it’s expensive even compared to US standards. I h...

Re: How do you make coffee at home?

Does it say I am in Costa Rica? I’m traveling at the moment.

The daily is a Moccamaster drip, Moka and Aeropress for specialty. But I have nearly every type of maker.

The coffee here, by the way, is amazing.

Re: An expensive hike to Tunnel Falls - 2023-12-28

I think I might buy one anyway and toss it in the car when leaving the city. I'm never hurting for cargo space. I have a donut for my GTI but I always throw a full size spare in the back if I am going to be doing a lot of gravel or heading way off the grid. When I did the Dempster Highway last year...

Re: Flag Point Lookout - 12/26-12/27/2023

Did you come up through Dufur? That stretch of road as you approach the NF boundary on down to the oak forests outside the NF is an epic place for "frost forest" photography when we have extended freezing fog events in the Columbia Basin. Yes, we did. And it was definitely much more frosty/icy belo...

Re: Flag Point Lookout - 12/26-12/27/2023

kdechant, if you're looking for a shorter journey by foot next week, you might consider driving south from Dufur on 197 and cutting east through the town of Friend. The road isn't plowed past the National Forest boundary (8.7 miles from the lookout), but considering current conditions and the upcom...
